EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice had a quiet night at the plate but that did not deter the Bengals from taking an 8-3 win over Monroe College on Wednesday at Bengal Stadium.
The Bengals (9-0) used nine walks and nine stolen bases to make up for being outhit by the Mustangs, 5-4.
Austin Kirkpatrick (Breaux Bridge, LA, Teurlings Catholic HS) led LSUE with two of the team's four hits.
LSUE struck for two runs in the opening inning off a wild pitch and a
Tristan Welch (Baton Rouge, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS) sacrifice fly.
Javier Vaz (Huntsville, AL, Huntsville HS) opened the frame with a walk before advancing to third on
Evan Keller's (Destrehan, LA, Destrehan HS) single.
Nick Bellina (Donaldsonville, LA, Ascension Catholic HS) would push the LSUE lead to 3-0 in the second after a walk, two stolen bases and a wild pitch would allow him to score.
Dane Dixon (Walker, LA, Walker HS) would all but silent the Monroe bats on the night. Dixon (2-0) would strike out seven batters over seven innings, giving up two runs off four hits while not issuing a walk. His lone earned run came off a solo home run by Daniel Alfonzo in the sixth inning.
After Monroe College cut the deficit to 3-2, LSUE would score five runs to push ahead for good. A failed squeeze attempt still produced a run in the sixth inning as
River Town (Zachary, LA, Zachary HS) avoided a tag at home to make it a 4-2 game.
The Bengals would score four runs in the seventh off four walks, two errors and a balk.
Tod Gauthe' (Brusly, LA, Brusly HS) and
Jacob Hammond (Monroe, LA, Ouachita HS) would each pitch an inning of relief as the Bengals pitchers piled up 11 strikeouts on the night.
LSUE will hit the road this weekend for a three-game series as Coastal Bend. The action form Beeville, Texas begins Friday with a 3:00PM doubleheader followed by a single game on Saturday at 6:00PM.
