LSUE Takes Opening Pair In Top-10 Showdown

EUNICE, La – Top-ranked LSU Eunice grabbed a pair of wins over No. 7 Kellogg CC as the top perennial NJCAA powers opened up a four-game series in Eunice on Friday.  The two teams have met every year since 2009.
 
The Bengals (13-1) capitalized on six errors in the opener to take a 10-0 win in eight innings, followed by a come from behind 10-3 victory in the late night game.  The two teams decided to move up a scheduled doubleheader to Friday due to expected bad weather in the Acadiana area.
 
LSUE will play a single game with Kellogg on Saturday at 6:00PM from Bengal Stadium.  The game can be seen live on Bengals All-Access.
 
Game 1 vs. Kellogg CC - W, 10-0
Andrew Sheridan (Sulphur, LA, Sulphur HS) continues his early dominance as the sophomore tossed seven shutout innings to pace LSU Eunice to a 10-0 victory in eight innings. 
 
Sheridan threw seven innings to pick up his fourth win of the early season.  The Sulphur HS product lowered his season earned run average to 0.41 after giving up three hits and two walks while striking out 11.  Sheridan retired the first eight batters he faced, sitting down the side in order three times.
 
Gage Trahan (Maurice, LA, Vermilion Catholic HS) would toss a perfect final frame, striking out the side.
 
LSUE struck for three runs in the second inning highlighted by a two-run double from Bren Faulk (Abbeville, LA, Erath HS)Nick Bellina (Donaldsonville, LA, Ascension Catholic HS) would drive in Slate Fuller (Lake Charles, LA, Barbe HS) off one of six Kellogg errors to put the Bengals on the board first.
 
Faulk led the Bengals with a four RBI outing, doubling home Austin Kirkpatrick (Breaux Bridge, LA, Teurlings Catholic HS) in the fifth and reaching on an error in the eighth.  Faulk was joined by Javier Vaz (Huntsville, AL, Huntsville HS), Slate Fuller, River Town (Zachary, LA, Zachary HS) and Austin Kirkpatrick with two-hit games.
 
Game 2 vs. Kellogg CC – W,
A four-run fourth inning helped LSU Eunice overcome a slow start as the Bengals downed Kellogg 10-3 in a seven inning contest.
 
Kellogg held a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the fourth after the Bruins scored a go ahead run off an error.  The Bengals responded with a one-out Evan Keller (Destrehan, LA, Destrehan HS) walk followed by a RBI triple from Javier Vaz.  Nick Bellina and Tristan Welch (Baton Rouge, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS) would piece together back-to-back two out run scoring hits, Welch's two-run double giving LSUE a 5-2 advantage.
 
After both teams swapped runs, LSUE pushed four more runs across in the sixth highlighted by Keller's two-run single.
 
Welch led the offensive attack in the game, accounting for four RBIs on two hits.  Keller and Vaz could drive in two runs each.
 
Jack Merrifield (Prairieville, LA, Dutchtown HS) (2-0) picked up the win in relief, tossing 1.1 perfect innings with three strikeouts. Tod Gauthe' (Brusly, LA, Brusly HS)received a no decision in his first start at LSUE, going three innings while giving up one earned run off three hits and two walks.  The sophomore struck out four batters.
 
Jacob Spell (Prairieville, LA, St. Amant HS), Jacob Hammond (Monroe, LA, Ouachita HS) and Austin Andrishok (Baton Rouge, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS) also pitched in relief.
