EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice scored a virtual wire-to-wire victory as the Bengals closed out their first year of men's basketball with an impressive 76-67 win over Delgado CC on Wednesday inside the HPRE Center. LSUE ended its first year under head coach Byron Starks 14-15 overall and 4-5 in LCCAC play.
Both teams traded blows early before a 14-3 LSUE run helped the Bengals push out to a 35-19 advantage with less than four minutes before half.
Trent Washington (Gibson, LA, Houma Christian HS) would play a big role in the Bengals early spurt, scoring 10 of his 15 points off the bench in the half. Washington would tandem with
Caleb Starks (Lafayette, LA, Lafayette Christian HS) who scored 16 of his team-high 20 points in the first half to help the Bengals go up 37-25 at intermission.
Delgado would charge back into the game on the heels of a 13-2 run in the second half to cut the deficit to three points, 69-66 with 1:44 left in the game. On the next possession, LSUE would break the Delgado press and have
Jacob Maxwell (Lafayette, LA, Acadiana HS) convert a wide open lay-up plus the foul.
Kaedrick Williams (Ruston, LA, Lincoln Prep HS) would all but seal the game on LSUE's next trip with the ball, connected on a mid-range jumper to give the Bengals a 74-67 lead with less than a minute to play. The Dolphins would turn the ball over on the ensuing possession.
Williams ended his Bengals career with nine points and eight rebounds. Other sophomores playing their last game at LSUE had a great night with
