Big Frames Help Guide LSUE To Friday Sweep At Wildcat Invite

POPLARVILLE, Ms. – A pair of nine-run innings helped LSU Eunice secure a pair of wins as the Bengals opened up play at the Wildcat Invitational on the campus of Pearl River CC.  The two wins helped LSUE (9-2) extend its current win streak to seven games.

A nine-run third inning was all the Bengals needed to secure a 10-5 decision over Baton Rouge CC, while a nine-run third helped LSUE pull away from Pearl River in a 17-9 mercy rule win.

The Bengals close out the Wildcat Invitational with two Saturday games, drawing Marion Military Institute beginning at 12:00PM followed by Mississippi Gulf Coast CC.

Baton Rouge CC – W, 10-5

Kelci Bodin's (New Iberia, LA, Loreauville HS) three-run home run punctuated a nine-run as LSUE scored a 10-5 victory over Baton Rouge CC to open the Wildcat Invitational.

Bodin's third homer this campaign pumped the Bengals' lead to 8-0 in the inning.  Mallory Little (Opelousas, LA, Opelousas Catholic HS) started the frame with a solo home run, the freshman's team leading fourth of the season.  Abbey Higginbotham (Church Point, LA, Notre Dame HS) and Abby Trahan (Hackberry, LA, Hackberry HS) would cap off the big inning with back-to-back run scoring singles that would also end the Bengals' scoring for the game.

Lauren Parson (DeRidder, LA, DeRidder HS) (1-1) would pick up her first win of the season after tossing three shutout innings, scattering two hits while striking out five.  Karli Ortego (Pine Prairie, LA, Pine Prairie HS) and Jeanne Trahan (Lake Charles, LA, Barbe HS) would come in relief to give up five runs with just one being earned.

The Bengals were hamstrung by six errors late in the game to allow BRCC to creep back into the game.

Little, Higginbotham and Bodin all paced the LSUE offense with two hits each.

Pearl River CC – W, 17-9

Abby Trahan drove in a team-high five RBIs to help propel LSUE to a 17-9 mercy rule win over Pearl River CC in five innings.  The Bengals used a nine-run third inning to race out to a 14-1 lead.

In that third frame, Trahan accounted for four of the nine runs.  The sophomore got the inning started with a three-run home run followed by a RBI single later in the stanza.

Trahan was joined by Sara Tate with three hit efforts in the contest.

Madison Monson (Walker, LA, Walker HS) gave the Bengals an early boost in the second inning, plating two runs on a triple to help LSUE push out to a 5-0 lead.

Heather Zumo (Baton Rouge, LA, Central HS) improved to 4-0 on the season after tossing a complete game.  The sophomore gave up five earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out seven.  Zumo would relieve Karli Ortego who did not record an out in the fifth after coming in to spell Zumo herself.
