Dixon's Gem Highlights Saturday Split

VICKSBURG, Miss. -  LSU Eunice pitcher Dane Dixon (Walker, LA, Walker HS) hurled an eight-inning jewel to highlight a Bengals doubleheader split on Saturday.  LSUE's two games were played at the Sports Force Turf Complex in Vicksburg, Miss. after inclement weather forced the move from East Central CC.

LSUE defeated East Central CC, 5-3, to open the day's three games followed by a 7-1 setback to Parkland College.  East Central would go on to defeat Parkland later in the day.

The Bengals will return home for a four-game homestand this week beginning on Wednesday, March 6 with Dakota State University for a 6:00PM game.  LSUE will welcome Murray State and Pearl River CC later this week for three games.

East Central CC – W, 5-3

Dane Dixon tossed eight innings as the sophomore captain helped pace LSU Eunice to a 5-3 victory over East Central CC.  It was Dixon's longest outing at LSUE.

Dixon's day started slow as the first two ECCC batters reached base with a hit by pitch.  The Warriors would plate the game's first run on a wild pitch.  After that slip-up, Dixon would allow just one hit over the next five innings as LSUE built a 5-1 lead.

The Bengals would take the lead for good in the third inning as LSUE capitalized on a first-and-third situation, using a throwing error to score their first run.  Tristan Welch (Baton Rouge, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS) would score the go-ahead run on a sacrifice line out to bring in Jarrett McDonald (Sterlington, LA, Sterlington HS).

Austin Kirkpatrick (Breaux Bridge, LA, Teurlings Catholic HS) would push the lead to 3-1 an inning later with a run scoring triple.  LSUE would score its final two runs in the seventh on a throwing error and sacrifice bunt.  Evan Keller (Destrehan, LA, Destrehan HS) would have two of the team's five hits in the game.

Dixon would give up runs in the seventh and eighth before giving way to Landon Clifton (Napoleonville, LA, Ascension Catholic HS) to close the game.  Dixon finished with five strikeouts and two walks while scattering three runs, two earned, on four hits.

Clifton would give up two hits but pick up his third save of the season.

Parkland College – L, 7-1

LSUE could not convert on a couple of bases loaded opportunities as Parkland College would run away for a 7-1 victory.  The Cobras would convert on key moments with five runs coming with two outs while LSUE would leave ten runners on base.

Alex Steinbach gave Parkland its first run of the game with a two-out solo home run in the second.  That lead would swell to 4-0 with a three-run fifth inning.

The Bengals would get their only run of the game in the sixth inning, as a Nick Webre (Youngsville, LA, Teurlings Catholic HS) fielder's choice allowed Tristan Welch to score.  LSUE would leave the bases loaded with a Javier Vaz (Huntsville, AL, Huntsville HS) pop up to third base.

Trevor Burkhart lead the Parkland charge with a three-hit game, scoring twice.

Kade Gonsoulin (New Iberia, LA, Catholic-New Iberia HS) was tagged with the loss after going 4.1 innings, giving up three earned runs on four hits and a walk.  Ryan Culley picked up the win for the Cobras with four no-hit innings.  LSUE would manage three hits in the game.
