EUNICE, La. – In tight games, the slightest of mistakes typically deals a team in and that was the case Friday in a battle of Top 5 NJCAA teams. Offensive missteps proved to be costly as LSU Eunice dropped a 4-3 11-inning marathon with Pearl River at Bengal Stadium.
The Bengals welcomes PRCC to town for a Friday doubleheader with Pearl River defeating Murray State earlier in the day.
Dexter Jordan laced a double to left field and broke up a tied game to give the Wildcats the go-ahead run in the 11th inning. Jordan drove in Will Cleland who had a hand in all four PRCC runs and finished a single short of the cycle.
The Bengals looked to finally have grabbed the upperhand with a pair of runs in the seventh inning to grab a 3-1 advantage. LSUE would not convert on a chance to expand its lead as the Bengals left the bases loaded in the frame, part of 13 LSUE base runners left stranded.
Slate Fuller (Lake Charles, LA, Barbe HS) pushed the go ahead run in with a sacrifice fly to score
Javier Vaz (Huntsville, AL, Huntsville HS), followed by
Tristan Welch's (Baton Rouge, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS) RBI single. Pearl River would respond in its next at bat with Cleland's two-run game tying home run that would chase LSUE starting pitcher
Andrew Sheridan (Sulphur, LA, Sulphur HS) in the eighth inning.
Sheridan received a no-decision in an otherwise sterling performance. The sophomore scattered three earned runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out nine batters. He would at one point retire nine batters in a row as well as strike out the side in the fifth on just ten pitches.
Gage Trahan (Maurice, LA, Vermilion Catholic HS) would keep the Bengals alive with three innings of relief with his only hit given up becoming the game-winning run in the 11th inning.
Cleland and PRCC would strike first with a RBI triple in the fourth inning. LSUE answered an inning later as
Jack Merrifield (Prairieville, LA, Dutchtown HS) singled home Javier Vaz.
Shemar Page was credited with the win for Pearl River, throwing 1.2 innings of hitless relief.
LSU Eunice will now turn its attention to Murray State for a two-game series beginning tomorrow. The Bengals and Aggies will play at 11:00AM from Bengal Stadium with the game seen live on Bengals All-Access.
