BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU Eunice used late offensive muscle to grab a pair of wins from Baton Rouge CC on Wednesday at Oak Villa Sports Complex. The Bengals (38-6) have won all 36 meetings against the Bears dating back to 2012.
LSUE used an eight-run fifth inning to take down BRCC, 10-1, in Game One, followed by a come from behind 12-5 victory in the nightcap. Madison Monson paced the Bengals offense with three home runs in the doubleheader.
The Bengals will take an extended break before hosting Alvin CC on Saturday, April 13. The doubleheader is set for a 1:00PM start time from Lady Bengal Field.
Game 1 vs. Baton Rouge CC – W, 10-1 (5 Innings)
An eight-run outburst in the fifth inning paved the way for LSUE to score a 10-1 run-rule victory over BRCC Madison Monson helped punctuate the win with a Grand Slam in the final frame.
Monson belted a season high five RBIs thanks to the slam as well as a third inning solo home run to help LSUE push out to an early 2-0 lead. BRCC would get within a run thanks to a Blayne Pence solo home run in the fourth, 2-1, before the Bengals blew past the Bears an inning later.
Abbey Higginbotham and Abby Trahan would drive in runs to start the fifth with a pair of singles in between a converted first-and-third double steal that made it a 5-1 LSUE lead. After the Bengals, loaded the bases, Lexi-Jo Debarge moved her Bengals over a station before Monson's big hit.
Lauren Parson (W, 6-1) collected the win after tossing the first three innings before BRCC's lone run would chase the freshman. Parson gave up the one earned run off four hits while striking out four.
Jensen Howell tossed her second save of the season, hurling two perfect innings with four sit downs.
Game 2 vs. Baton Rouge CC – W, 12-5
Another big spot in the fifth inning helped LSU Eunice overcome an early deficit and take down BRCC 12-5 to close out the doubleheader. The home run again played a major role in the win with Hannah Carpenter's three-run home run erasing a 4-1 deficit in that frame.
Mallory Little gave LSUE the lead for good a few batters later, doubling home Rylie Candella to make it 5-4 Bengals. Kelci Bodin added to LSUE's lead with a two-run two-out single to close out the scoring in the fifth.
The Bengals added insurance with a four-run seventh, highlighted by Madison Monson's two-run homer.
Monson and Rylie Candella both posted multi-hit games while seven different Bengals drove in a run.
Jensen Howell grabbed the win in four innings of relief work. Howell (W, 15-3) gave up one unearned run on two hits and not issuing a walk with two strikeouts. Heather Zumo received a no decision after three innings of action.
