Rookies Pace LSUE To Saturday Sweep

YOUNGSVILLE, La. – LSU Eunice scored a pair of run-rule victories on Saturday at the Youngsville Sports Complex thanks to strong performances by their freshman class.  The Bengals (2-1) also secured the first wins for first year head coach Meghan Collins.

LSUE upended Snead State CC, 9-1, in five innings followed by a 10-2 decision against Iowa Western in five innings.  Freshmen accounted for 12 of the 14 RBIs and scored 12 of the team's 19 runs, led by three RBIs a piece from Sydnei Simon (Rayne, LA, Notre Dame HS) and Olivia Hennen (Choudrant, LA, Choudrant HS).

The Bengals will close out their weekend stay at the Chipola Invitational tomorrow with a 9:00AM contest against Lake Land College.

Game 1 vs. Snead State CC – W, 9-1 (5 Innings)

LSU Eunice used a seven-run first inning to propel the Bengals in a 9-1 mercy rule win over Snead State CC.

The Bengals yielded a run in the top half of the first inning before responding in a big way.  LSUE only managed three hits but used two errors and two walks to put up the seven run frame.  Olivia Hennen provided the critical hit with a two-out bases loaded three RBI triple to cap off the inning.  The Bengals would also score from a Jacie McFarlain (Pine Prairie, LA, Pine Prairie HS) RBI single, Jessi Cary's (Rayne, LA, Rayne HS) sacrifice fly and Snead State error.

Karli Ortego (Pine Prairie, LA, Pine Prairie HS) would shut down the Snead State offense for the remainder of the game, giving up just one hit and striking out two batters.  Ortego (W, 1-1) picked up the complete game victory after scattering just four hits and not issuing a walk.

Hennen would score off a Snead State error in the fourth inning after tripling to lead off the inning.  The Bengals would grab the mercy rule win after Karli Fontenot (Ville Platte, LA, Sacred Heart-Ville Platte HS) would bunt home Kennedy Smith (Rayne, LA, Notre Dame HS).

Game 2 vs. Iowa Western CC – W, 10-2 (5 Innings)

Sydnei Simon provided a dual threat for LSU Eunice in the circle and at bat to lead LSU Eunice to a 10-2 victory over Iowa Western CC in five innings.  The freshman picked up her first win of the season as well as driving in a game-high three runs and scoring twice.

The Bengals roared out to a four-run first inning off two steals of home plate by Olivia Hennen and Gracie King (Winnsboro, LA, Franklin Parish HS), as well as King's two-run triple.

Simon would not allow a hit until the fifth inning, with both of Iowa Western's runs coming off of errors.  The Notre Dame HS product would toss 5.0 innings, giving up two runs with only one earned and one hit while striking out six and issuing two walks.

Jacie McFarlain and Mallory Little (Opelousas, LA, Opelousas Catholic HS) would sacrifice runs in while Sydnei Simon's ground ball induced a two run error as part of a four-run fourth inning to push LSUE's lead to 8-1.  After IWCC would score in the fifth, LSUE would plate a run off a first and third opportunity before Simon walked the game off with a single to score Olivia Hennen.
