Quick Start Guides No. 1 LSUE To Monroe Opener

EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice baseball used a pair of big innings to score a 12-0 win over Monroe College on Friday at Bengal Stadium.  The win pushes LSUE to 10-0 to start the season for a fifth consecutive year.

The Bengals pounced for five runs in the opening frame, using just two hits and a Monroe error.  Jack Merrifield (Prairieville, LA, Dutchtown HS) starting the scoring with a one-out single to left field to drive in River Town (Zachary, LA, Zachary HS).  Merrifield would later score on a wild pitch.  Thomas Stevens (Crowley, LA, Notre Dame HS) would push the LSUE advantage to 4-0 with a single to second base and a Mustang error that would score two more.

Stevens would end the scoring in the first inning by coming home on a wild pitch.  The redshirt freshman was a driving force in the Bengals' offense, going 2-for-3 on the evening with two RBIs and two runs scored.

The first inning output was more than enough for Simon Miller (Canton, TX, Canton HS), turning in his best performance of the young season.  The freshman tossed five scoreless innings, scattering five hits and three walks while throwing a season's best 10 strikeouts.

Logan Gray (Lake Charles, LA, St. Louis Catholic HS) would finish the game with two innings of one-hit relief.

After Stevens would score on another wild pitch in the third inning to make it 6-0 LSUE, the Bengals would cross six more runs in the fifth inning to secure the mercy rule win.

Peyton LeJeune (Church Point, LA, Teurlings Catholic) would jumpstart the fifth inning with a two-run single to right field.  Scott Jones (Sulphur, LA, Sulphur HS) would continue the frame with a two-out three-RBI triple to make it 11-0 Bengals.  Thomas Stevens would follow a batter later with a RBI triple.

Jones and Stevens were the only Bengals to grab multi-hit games in LSUE's eight-hit game.

LSUE and Monroe will be back in action Saturday with a 1:00PM matinee from Bengal Stadium.
