EUNICE, La. – After three runs from Kellogg CC in the sixth inning, the LSU Eunice baseball was pushed up against a wall for one of the few times in the first month of the season.
The top-ranked Bengals (14-0) responded in emphatic fashion.
LSUE rattled off eight unanswered runs to secure the team's seventh mercy rule win of the season.
The rally started with a
Javier Vaz (Huntsville, AL, Huntsville HS) single that would allow
Peyton LeJeune (Church Point, LA, Teurlings Catholic) to score off one of five Bruin errors.
River Town (Zachary, LA, Zachary HS) and
Jack Merrifield (Prairieville, LA, Dutchtown HS) pieced together back-to-back RBI base hits to double up Kellogg, 10-5.
Scott Jones (Sulphur, LA, Sulphur HS) would end the four-run frame with a RBI infield single.
Jones joined Town,
Peyton LeJeune (Church Point, LA, Teurlings Catholic) and LeJeune with multi-hit games in the Bengals' 14-hit attack.
After two sacrifice flies, LeJeune ended the game in the eighth inning with a walk-off two-run triple to trigger the run-rule. The freshman led LSUE with three RBis as well as two runs scored.
LSUE jumped out to a 7-2 lead through five innings thanks in large part to a four-run fourth off two sacrifice flies, an error and
Jarrett McDonald (Sterlington, LA, Sterlington HS) RBI single.
Simon Miller (Canton, TX, Canton HS) improved to 4-0 on the season after laboring through 5.1 innings of work. The freshman gave up four earned runs off four hits and four walks while striking out seven batters.
Caleb Seroski (Breaux Bridge, LA, Breaux Bridge HS),
Dawson Alexander (Lake Charles, LA, Barbe HS) and
Christian Gonzales (Breaux Bridge, LA, Breaux Bridge HS) all saw time in relief.
LSUE will play its first doubleheader of the season with a twinbill against Kellogg CC tomorrow starting at 1:00PM. Both games from Bengal Stadium can be seen on-line on Bengal All-Access.
