LSUE Splits Angelina Doubleheader At Home

EUNICE, La. – Offense was on full display as LSU Eunice split a Tuesday doubleheader with Angelina College at the Lady Bengal Stadium.  The two teams combined for 29 runs and nine home runs.

LSUE (4-2) scored seven unanswered runs to score a 13-5 run-rule win in game two, and fell short in a late rally 7-6 to conclude the twin bill.  Olivia Hennen (Choudrant, LA, Choudrant HS) paced the Bengals offensively with six hits and six RBIs in the two games.

The Bengals will head back out on the road this weekend to play in the Visit Dothan Invitational.  The action will start on Friday, February with an early afternoon doubleheader against Calhoun CC and Walters State CC beginning at 1:30PM.

Game 1 vs. Angelina College – W, 13-5

Olivia Hennen and Gracie King (Winnsboro, LA, Franklin Parish HS) helped propel the Bengals to a 13-5 run-rule win in six innings over Angelina College to open up their doubleheader against the Roadrunners.  LSUE would score seven unanswered runs in the final two innings to trigger the mercy rule.

The Roadrunners were first out the gate with three runs in the first inning.  LSUE would respond in impressive fashion, plating six unanswered runs over the next three at-bats, beginning with Gracie King's first inning solo home run.

The Bengals would take the lead for good with three runs an inning later as Jessi Cary (Rayne, LA, Rayne HS) and Olivia Hennen both drove in runs followed by Kennedy Smith (Rayne, LA, Notre Dame HS) scoring on a passed ball.  Hennen would up the lead to 6-3 an inning later with a two-run single on a misplayed pop up to short left field.

Angelina would not go down quietly with two solo home runs in the fourth and fifth inning to claw back to 6-5.  Hennen would jumpstart the LSUE offense again with a fifth inning RBI single to score Cary, followed by a Sydnei Simon (Rayne, LA, Notre Dame HS) double to score Hennen and Smith.  The five-run inning was capped off by Gracie King's second homer of the game to make it 11-5 LSUE.

Hennen would put the punctuation mark on a perfect 5-for-5 game with a two-run double in the sixth to score the mercy-rule, giving her six RBIs on the game.

Karli Ortego (Pine Prairie, LA, Pine Prairie HS) (W, 3-1) threw her second complete game of the season, scattering five runs off eight hits while striking out four.  Only two of the runs the sophomore gave up were earned.

Game 2 vs. Angelina College – L, 6-7

LSU Eunice could not outslug a power hitting Angelina College to close out its Tuesday doubleheader, falling 7-6.  The Roadrunners would belt four home runs in the game, headlined by two from Sara Mayes.

The Bengals were never able to hold the lead for long as the two teams went back and forth throughout the game as Jolie Cary's sixth inning solo home run helped LSUE tie the game 5-5 for the third time.  Angelina would answer with two solo shots in the seventh to give the Runners a 7-5 edge.

LSUE would do its best to rally with Olivia Hennen opening the frame with a leadoff double.  The freshmen would come around to score on a Jacie McFarlain (Pine Prairie, LA, Pine Prairie HS) sacrifice fly, but the threat was squashed, as Karli Fontenot (Ville Platte, LA, Sacred Heart-Ville Platte HS) would ground out with a runner on to end the game.

McFarlain led the offense with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Fontenot and Gracie King added multi-hit games.

The Bengals temporarily took the lead in the first inning and McFarlain and Fontenot drove in runs to erase an early deficit and give LSUE a 2-1 lead.  Angelina would jump back out ahead, 4-2, before Mallory Little (Opelousas, LA, Opelousas Catholic HS) tied the game again in the third inning with a two-run fly ball error.
