LATE OFFENSE HELPS LSUE EARN SATURDAY SPLIT IN DOTHAN
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – FEBRUARY 8, 2020
DOTHAN, Ala. – LSU Eunice split another day of action at the Dothan Invitational on Saturday from James Oates Park. The Bengals (6-4) close out the five-game weekend on Sunday against defending Division I National Champion Chipola College.
The Bengals could not overcome an early deficit, falling to Southern Union State 6-2 but rallied to take down Georgia Military College 8-4 in late night action.
Sydnei Simon (Rayne, LA, Notre Dame HS) was a bright spot offensively on Satruday, account for four hits, two RBIs and one run scored.
Game 1 vs. Southern Union State – L, 2-6
LSU Eunice allowed Southern Union State to plate six unanswered runs early and it was too much to overcome, falling 6-2. The Bengals had their chances to rally, leaving 11 runners on base.
LSUE was first to strike in the opening inning as
Jacie McFarlain (Pine Prairie, LA, Pine Prairie HS) drove in
Gracie King (Winnsboro, LA, Franklin Parish HS) with a two-out single. The Bison would respond with a pair of runs in the first, followed by three more an inning later to take a 5-1 advantage.
Kailey LeFrere (DeRidder, LA, DeRidder HS) would get LSUE back in the scoring column with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 6-2.
The Bengals would have a chance for a late rally with two runners on and one out. A fielder's choice and strikeout would squash the threat.
LSUE managed only eight hits on the game with Sydnei Simon,
Karli Fontenot (Ville Platte, LA, Sacred Heart-Ville Platte HS) and McFarlain grabbed multi-hit outings.
Simon (L, 2-1) was tagged with her first loss of the season, giving up six runs off 14 hits and one walk while striking out five batters.
Game 2 vs. Georgia Military College – W, 8-4
A four-run sixth inning helped LSUE break a late tie and grab an 8-4 victory over Georgia Military College to close out Saturday action.
The bottom of the LSUE lineup jumpstarted the rally as LSUE scored all four runs with two outs. Mallory Little would triple to score Mia Romero, followed by an RBI single by Morgan Harlow to give LSUE a 6-4 lead. Sydnei Simon capped off the frame with a two-run double.
Karli Ortego (Pine Prairie, LA, Pine Prairie HS) would sit down the Bulldogs in order in the seventh to preserve her fourth win of the season. Ortego (W, 4-3) gave up four earned runs off seven hits and a walk in a complete game effort.
LSUE's offense would come to life midway through the game with a three-run fourth inning to take a temporary lead. The Bengals would use a sacrifice fly, error and
Mallory Little (Opelousas, LA, Opelousas Catholic HS) RBI single to grab a 4-1 lead before Georgia Military responded with its own three-run frame in the fifth.
Sydnei Simon, Little and
Morgan Harlow (Lake Charles, LA, Westlake HS) all had multi-hit games.
