LSUE Dealt Doubleheader Heartbreak At Mississippi Gulf Coast

PERKINSTON, Miss.- LSU Eunice suffered a pair of setbacks at Mississippi Gulf Coast on Monday in a doubleheader between the two NJCAA ranked squads.  The Bengals (11-10) have dropped all three meetings with the Bulldogs.

LSUE fell 7-0 in the opener as the Bengals were not able to get a hit on MGCCC starter Kristen Cade, followed by Gulf Coast rallying from a 10-run hole to upend the Bengals, 12-11.

The Bengals are back in action on Wednesday, March 11 with a doubleheader at Pearl River CC.  LSUE will head home on Friday, March 13 for a return twinbill against Mississippi Gulf Coast CC.

Game 1 vs. Mississippi Gulf Coast CC – L, 0-7
LSU Eunice had no answer for Mississippi Gulf Coast's Kristen Cade as the Bengals fell 7-0 in the doubleheader opener.

Cade tossed a no-hitter for Mississippi Gulf Coast, striking out nine batters while issuing three walks.

The Bengals were able to get the lead off batter on base three separate times but were not able to get a base runner past second base.

LSUE kept the Bulldogs at bay for the majority of the game, besides a disastrous second inning.  The Bengals surrendered six runs with two outs after nearly completing an inning ending double play that would have kept the game scoreless.  MGCCC would follow with a two-run home run to make it 3-1.  The Bulldogs would push across all seven of their runs in the inning.

Game 2 vs. Mississippi Gulf Coast, - L, 11-12
LSUE saw Mississippi Gulf Coast erase a 10-run deficit as the Bengals fell 12-11 to close out the doubleheader.

The Bengals jumped ahead with a 10-run third inning thanks to home runs from Karli Fontenot (Ville Platte, LA, Sacred Heart-Ville Platte HS), Mallory Little (Opelousas, LA, Opelousas Catholic HS) and Rylie Candella (Centerville, LA, Centerville HS).  LSUE would get nine hits in the inning including a pair from Sydnei Simon (Rayne, LA, Notre Dame HS).

Gulf Coast would trim the lead in half with a five run bottom half of the inning to make it 10-5 LSUE.

Gracie King (Winnsboro, LA, Franklin Parish HS) would give LSUE more life with a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning, part of her three-hit game.

The Bulldogs would continue to chip away with four runs in the fifth and a go-ahead three-run home run in the sixth.

LSUE would get a one-out walk in the seventh, but Kristen Cade would shut down the LSUE bats for a second straight game with 1.2 innings of work to pick up the win.

Karli Ortego (Pine Prairie, LA, Pine Prairie HS) would go the distance for the Bengals.
