EUNICE, La. – After being limited to just four hits in its season opener, LSU Eunice's offense exploded for a 13-hit day, sparking an 11-1 victory over LSU Alexandria in seven innings at Bengal Stadium on Saturday afternoon. It was LSUE's first mercy rule win of the year, after securing 14 in a 21-game shortened season last year.
LSUE would score in all but one inning with
Jack Merrifield (Prairieville, LA, Dutchtown HS) getting it started in the first inning with a RBI single to drive in
Carter Quinn (Lake Charles, LA, Barbe HS). Merrifield would score later in the inning of a
Thomas Stevens (Crowley, LA, Notre Dame HS) sacrifice bunt.
The Bengals would really push ahead with a three run fifth inning, highlighted by
Kole Myers' (Jennings, LA, Jennings HS) two-run home run to make it 7-0 LSUE. The Generals would respond with their only run in the sixth, before the Bengals would answer back with a four run bottom half.
Myers enjoyed a break out afternoon, going 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs and two runs scored. Merrifield,
Scott Jones (Sulphur, LA, Sulphur HS) and Quinn were the other Bengals to record multiple hit games.
Drew Lasseigne (Greenwell Springs, LA, Central HS) (1-0) delivered LSUE another solid starting performance on the mound, throwing 5.1 shutout innings while giving up just two hits and two walks with eight strikeouts.
Austin Andrishok (Baton Rouge, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS) and
Dalton Burrell (Bossier City, LA, Airline HS) would come in relief.
LSUE will aim for a weekend sweep on Sunday with a 2:00PM matinee from Bengal Stadium.
