NEW ORLEANS, La. –
Isaiah Payne (Ville Platte, LA, Pine Prairie HS) connected on a buzzer beating three point basket to erase a 23-point second half deficit and deliver LSU Eunice a thrilling 84-82 victory over Delgado CC on Saturday at the Michael Williamson Center.
The Bengals (5-0, 3-0 LCCAC) found themselves in a 65-42 hole with 13:25 remaining in the game after a putback inside by the Dolphins. LSUE used an 11-0 run in 3:23 capped off by Jonathan Cisse's fast break layup to cut its deficit in half, 67-56 with 8:33 to play.
Cisse (Grand Coteau, LA, St. Thomas More HS) led all scorers with 34 points, 27 coming in the second half alone.
The Dolphins seemed poised to ward off the Bengals' threat with another second chance basket giving Delgado an 81-74 lead with 1:11 remaining. That set the stage for a memorable minute, fueled largely by Payne.
The sophomore guard netted four straight free throws, followed by a Cisse steal during a full court press. Cisse tie the game 81-81 with 38 seconds left after converting the turnover into a layup plus a free throw after being fouled on the shot attempt.
Delgado made a free throw of its own with 21 seconds left to take a one point lead, giving the Bengals a final possession. After LSUE couldn't get the ball in the hands of Cisse, Payne used a crossover dribble before lifting up a three pointer from the wing that bounced high off the rim before trickling in as time expired.
Payne tallied 26 points with the game winner his only three-point basket of the night.
LSU Eunice continues is road trip with a date at Southern-Shreveport on Wednesday, March 3. The nightcap of the LCCAC doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 7:30PM.
