GALVESTON, Texas – LSU Eunice used all three phases of the game to take home a Saturday sweep in the final day of the Galveston Invitational.
The Bengals notched their second straight run-rule victory of the weekend in a 15-1 decision over Alvin to start the day and then walked off on Connors State, 6-5.
Maddie Leal (Houston, TX, Spring HS) paced the LSUE offense for the day, collecting five hits, two RBIs and five runs scored. Over the two games, LSUE had 11 extra base hits including home runs by
Gracie King (Winnsboro, LA, Franklin Parish HS) and
Rylie Candella (Centerville, LA, Centerville HS).
LSUE returns home for the start of a 16-game home stand starting next Saturday, February 13 against Southern Arkansas University Tech. The action from Lady Bengal Field is scheduled to being at 12:00PM.
Game 1 vs. Alvin CC – W, 15-1
LSU Eunice smashed 17 hits with five Bengals producing multi-hit games in a 15-1 five-inning rout of Alvin CC. The Bengals secured the mercy rule victory with 10 runs in the final two frames.
Cendall Barton (Elmer, LA, Alexandria Senior HS) helped her own cause with a RBI single to start the scoring for LSUE in the first inning. Barton went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored in her first collegiate win as a pitcher. In the circle, the freshman tossed three scoreless innings with four strikeouts while giving up one hit.
Raegan Pilgreen (Ruston, LA, Quitman HS) came in relief for two innings in her first action with LSUE.
After a three-run first inning, LSUE pushed its lead to 5-0 in the third off
Abby Touchet's (Shreveport, LA, C.E. Byrd HS) RBI triple. LSUE broke the game open with four runs an inning later, highlighted by Touchet's two run single. The freshman catcher drove in three runs on a 2-for-2 morning at the plate.
The Bengals plated six more to go up 15-0 before a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth would give Alvin its lone run of the game.
Olivia Hennen (Choudrant, LA, Choudrant HS) was responsible for three of those runs with a two run double and scoring later on a stolen base of home plate.
Hennen and Touchet joined Maddie Leal, Gracie King and Barton with multi-hit games. King went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored.
Game 2 vs. Connors State College – W, 6-5
Karli Fontenot (Ville Platte, LA, Sacred Heart-Ville Platte HS) broke a seventh inning tie with a line drive to centerfield to score Maddie Leal and deliver a 6-5 win over Connors State. It's the Bengals first walk-off since defeating defending NJCAA National Champion Chipola College last season.
LSUE took a 5-2 lead heading into the final frame before the Cowgirls used a bases loaded three run double to tie it going into the Bengals' final at bat.
Rylie Candella (Centerville, LA, Centerville HS) scored LSUE's first run of the game in the second inning with a solo home run to tie the game, 1-1. After briefly falling behind a second time, LSUE would rattle off four straight runs highlighted by Gracie King's fourth inning solo home run.
Maddie Leal led the 12-hit attack with a 3-for-4 game, driving in a run and scoring twice. Candella was the other Bengal to record a multi-hit game.
Chloe Brouillette (Mansfield, LA, Stanley HS) tossed a complete game in her first collegiate appearance. Brouilette scattered five earned runs off 12 hits and two walks while striking out three batters.
