EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice sophomore
Brady Hebert (Baton Rouge, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS) capped off a red-hot week as the Bengals scored a Saturday sweep of Nunez CC on Saturday at Bengal Stadium. The Bengals (28-3) swept the Pelicans in the first round of home-and-home doubleheaders featuring in-state teams.
Hebert's three-run double helped LSUE score a run-rule 8-0 win in the opener, followed by a 6-2 win in the capper. The co-captain collected four hits while driving in six runs and scoring twice on the day. This past week, Hebert has saw his batting average rise nearly 50 points to a team-best .453 season average.
Jarrett McDonald (Sterlington, LA, Sterlington HS) also enjoyed a solid day, collecting a team's best five hits during the twinbill.
LSU Eunice will turn its attention to Delgado CC for a four-game series this week. The Bengals and Dolphins square off in New Orleans on Wednesday before coming back to Eunice on Saturday for a pair of doubleheaders.
Game 1 vs. Nunez CC – W, 8-0
A six-run sixth inning helped push LSU Eunice to an 8-0 run-rule victory over Nunez CC. It was the Bengals' fifth shutout of the season.
A third inning
Jack Merrifield (Prairieville, LA, Dutchtown HS) RBI single was the lone run for a majority of the game as LSUE used a dominant outing on the mound by
Drew Lasseigne (Greenwell Springs, LA, Central HS) to ward off the Pelicans. Lasseigne (5-0) tossed a complete game, scattering five hits and three walks while striking out six batters. He did not allow a hit until the fourth inning and got out of a bases loaded jam in that inning with a momentum squashing double play.
Nunez CC was limited to three runners reaching scoring position.
Hunter Tabb (Scott, LA, Acadiana HS) started the big frame with a single that would help Jarrett McDonald score off an error. Following
Carter Quinn's (Lake Charles, LA, Barbe HS) bases loaded RBI single, Brady Hebert provided the big punch with a bases clearing three-run double. He would score a batter later on a sacrifice bunt from
Peyton LeJeune (Church Point, LA, Teurlings Catholic HS).
Hebert added the mercy-rule inducing run an inning later with a RBI single. He was joined by Merrifield with three-hit games while McDonald and Tabb added multi-hit outings.
Game 2 vs. Nunez CC – W, 6-2
LSU Eunice grinded out a 6-2 win in the finale to complete a four-game sweep of Nunez CC. The Bengals were led by a three-hit game from Jarrett McDonald, driving in a pair of runs.
McDonald helped LSUE push out to a 4-0 lead with RBI doubles in the first and third innings. Those runs were sandwiched between a perfectly executed double suicide squeeze from Brady Hebert in the second inning.
Nunez would creep back into the game with a pair of runs before
Scott Jones (Sulphur, LA, Sulphur HS) provided valuable insurance with a towering two-run home run in the sixth.
That was more than enough for
Jacob Hammond (Monroe, LA, Ouachita HS), who worked a perfect final inning to pick up his third save of the season.
Cade Hart (Shreveport, LA, Calvary Baptist HS) grabbed his first collegiate win in his first start, going four innings while giving up one run off five hits and a walk. Hart also struck out six batters.
Dalton Burrell (Bossier City, LA, Airline HS) and
Austin Andrishok (Baton Rouge, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS) also saw time in relief of Hart.
