EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice raced out to a quick 4-1 lead and never looked back, taking down Murray State College 6-2 on Sunday at Bengal Stadium. The Bengals (15-2) split the four-game weekend series with the Aggies.
Murray State was first to score off a passed ball in the first inning. The Bengals would respond with authority as
Thomas Stevens (Crowley, LA, Notre Dame HS) and
Peyton LeJeune (Church Point, LA, Teurlings Catholic HS) led off the inning with back-to-back base hits. LSUE would then product three straight run scoring at bats with
Scott Jones (Sulphur, LA, Sulphur HS),
Ayden Makarus (Okotoks, Alberta, Canada, Foothills Composite HS) and
Hunter Tabb (Scott, LA, Acadiana HS) engineering a three-run frame for the Bengals.
LSUE would tack on another run an inning later as
Jack Merrifield (Prairieville, LA, Dutchtown HS) doubled home LeJeune.
The Bengals would capitalize on one of six Murray State errors in the fourth with Brady Hebert scoring on an overthrow of a stolen base attempt at third base. Hebert would provide the final run of the day on a sacrifice to center field to plate
Jarrett McDonald (Sterlington, LA, Sterlington HS).
Stevens led the offensive charge with a three-hit afternoon. Merrifield, Jones and Tabb enjoyed multi-hit games in LSUE's 11-hit game.
Luke McGibboney (Gonzales, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS) (1-0) scored his first collegiate win, going five innings. The freshman scattered two runs off four hits and four walks.
Austin Andrishok (Baton Rouge, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS) and
Jacob Hammond (Monroe, LA, Ouachita HS) strung together four scoreless relief innings.
LSU Eunice continues its marathon stretch with a Monday road trip to Wharton County JC. The Bengals and Pioneers throw out first pitch from Corbett Park at 3:00PM.
