TYLER, Texas – LSU Eunice softball suffered a doubleheader sweep at Tyler JC on Sunday. It's just the third time this season the Bengals (29-17) loss both games of a twinbill.
LSUE's offense could not get started with a 2-0 loss in the opener, followed by a heartbreaking 8-7 setback in 10 innings to close out the day.
The Bengals will try to regroup on the road Monday as LSU Eunice heads to Bossier Parish CC.
Game 1 vs. Tyler JC – L, 0-2
LSU Eunice had no answer for Emilie Hoelscher as the Bengals were limited to just one hit in a 2-0 loss to Tyler JC.
The Apaches struck out 12 LSUE batters, giving up just two walks and a first inning single. That first inning saw the Bengals threaten with two runners on and one out before a pickoff and strikeout ending the opportunity.
Tyler would score its runs on a second inning sacrifice fly and third inning solo home run as Cendall Barton did her best to keep the Bengals in the game, scattering just four hits and two walks.
LSU Eunice had 14 straight batters go down in order before a sixth inning walk ended that run.
Game 2 vs. Tyler JC – L, 7-8
LSU Eunice clawed its way out of a seven-run hole only to lose a heartbreaker in 10 innings, 8-7.
The Bengals found themselves trailing 7-0 in the fifth inning when Abby Touchet woke up the LSUE bats with a pinch hit grand slam. Rylie Candella and Karli Fontenot would inch LSUE to 7-6 in the sixth on a RBI double and single, respectively.
Sydnei Simon scored the game tying run in the seventh inning off a misplayed Gracie King fly ball. LSUE could not push King across for the game winner with a pair of ground outs.
Fontenot doubled to lead off the 10th inning and would be sacrificed to third but LSUE could not get the go-ahead run to come across. An error, TJC double and single would deliver the game winning run for the Apaches in the bottom half of the inning.
The loss overshadows a terrific relief outing by Kinsley Ashworth. The freshman tossed 6.1 innings in relief, giving up the one unearned run with one walk and six hits. Ashworth (7-4) also struck out four batters.
Karli Fontenot was the long Bengal to record a multi-hit game.
