Long Ball Guides Bengals To BRCC Sweep

EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice blasted five home runs to help propel the Bengals to a doubleheader sweep of Baton Rouge CC on Thursday.  The Bengals (31-19) are ranked ninth nationally in home runs with 55 on the season.

LSUE used a seven-run inning including a pair of three-run bombs in a 12-1 opener, followed by 10-2 victory spearheaded by a two homer game from Ashlyn Roach (Calhoun, LA, West Ouachita HS).

The Bengals hit the road on Saturday to face National Park College for a noon doubleheader.

Game 1 vs. Baton Rouge CC – W, 12-1
LSU Eunice used a seven-run inning to help propel the Bengals to a 12-1 run-rule victory over Baton Rouge in five innings.

The Bengals belted a pair of three-run home runs in the big inning.  Sydnei Simon (Rayne, LA, Notre Dame HS) lifted one out to left center to push the Bengals' lead to 6-0, while Karli Fontenot (Ville Platte, LA, Sacred Heart-Ville Platte HS) capped off the big frame with her sixth homer of the season.  The Bengals started the scoring in the third with a Katelyn Courville (Lake Charles, LA, St. Louis Catholic HS) bunt single RBI.

Fontenot led the Bengals offense with a 2-for-3 game, driving in four runs and scoring twice.  The sophomore doubled home a run in the first inning.  LSUE plated four runs in the opening inning, using two hits, two walks and an error.

Simon would pick up the win after tossing three scoreless innings, giving up one hit.  The Notre Dame HS product would help her own cause with a 2-for-2 game.

Maddie Leal (Houston, TX, Spring HS) produced a pair of RBIs, sacrificing the first run home and driving in a second inning run on a ground ball through the infield.

Fontenot and Simon would be joined by Katelyn Courville with multi-hit games.

Game 2 vs. Baton Rouge CC – W, 10-2
A trio of big home runs helped lift LSU Eunice to a 10-2 win over Baton Rouge in five innings to secure the doubleheader sweep.  All but one run for the Bengals came by way of the long ball.

Rylie Candella (Centerville, LA, Centerville HS) tied the game up in the second inning on a hard ground ball that would score Gracie King (Winnsboro, LA, Franklin Parish HS).  LSUE would go up for good later in the frame as Kennedy Smith (Rayne, LA, Notre Dame HS) belted a three-run home run to give LSUE the 4-1 advantage.

After BRCC cut into the deficit with a third inning run, Ashlyn Roach took over.  The freshman knocked a third inning grand slam, followed by a walk-off two-run bomb.   Roach drove in a career best 6 RBI while scoring twice.

Raegan Pilgreen (Ruston, LA, Quitman HS) picked up the win after tossing four innings, scattering two runs off three hits and a walk.
