EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice split its final home doubleheader of the season with Tyler JC on Monday at Lady Bengal Field. In between the two games, LSUE (34-20) honored its nine departing sophomore student-athletes.
Karli Fontenot enjoyed a memorable final regular season day at Lady Bengal Field. Fontenot connected on a thrilling three-run walk-off home run in the first game to give LSUE a 5-4 victory. The Bengals would fall 7-2 in the finale.
LSUE will hit the road for the remainder of the final week of the regular season. LSU Eunice heads to Blinn College on Thursday, followed by a trip on Friday to San Jacinto.
Game 1 vs. Tyler JC – W, 5-4
LSU Eunice rallied late with five unanswered runs including a thrilling walk-off home run to capture a 5-4 victory over Tyler JC to open the doubleheader.
Karli Fontenot lifted the first pitch she saw with two outs in the last inning, smashing a three-run home run to straight away center field to set off a celebration at home plate. It was the Bengals' fourth walk-off victory of the season.
The win was fueled by Fontenot, would drove in all five runs on a 4-for-4 game at the plate. Her fifth inning double scored a pair to put LSUE on the board.
The Apaches raced out to a 4-0 lead after two runs in both the first and third innings.
Cendall Barton silenced the Apache bats, tossing four shutout innings of relief. Barton (5-8) gave up two hits and three walks while striking out a pair.
Game 2 vs. Tyler JC – L, 2-7
A four-run inning was too much to overcome as LSUE felt to Tyler JC 7-2 to close out the doubleheader. The Bengals were saddled with six errors, including two critical missteps in that four-run frame.
Tyler JC used a pair of home runs to help race out a 7-0 lead. The Bengals would try to chip again away beginning in the sixth inning as Ashlyn Roach's double scored Rylie Candella in the sixth inning.
LSUE would put a scare into TJC in that final inning, as Syndei Simon scratched a run across with a RBI single. Following a Karli Fontenot walk, the last two Bengals would go down in order to squash the threat.
Maddie Leal led the Bengals' offensive charge, connecting for three of the team's five hits.
