EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice used a late offensive spurt in Saturday's twinbill against Baton Rouge CC to secure a split at Bengal Stadium in the Bengals' regular season home finale. LSUE (42-5) closed out the 2021 home portion with a 24-5 record.
The Bengals found themselves in early holes in both games with the Bears, climbing out during game one for an 8-5 victory followed by an 11-0 setback in the nightcap.
LSUE is scheduled to close out the regular season on Sunday with a doubleheader at Baton Rouge scheduled for 2:00PM. The Bengals will then shift their focus to the postseason with the Region 23 Tournament at host Pearl River CC on May 17-22.
Game 1 vs. Baton Rouge CC – W, 8-5
LSUE Eunice came alive in the second half of its opener with Baton Rouge CC to score an 8-5 come-from-behind victory. The Bengals outscore BRCC 8-2 over the final five innings.
Baton Rouge jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a pair of runs in the second inning and a run in the fourth. The Bengal bats would be jumpstarted by Scott Jones, launching a towering two-run home run to left field in the fourth inning. Peyton LeJeune would beat out a double play attempt to allow Beau Kirsch to score and tie the game up 3-3.
Kirsch would give LSUE its first lead of the game with a RBI single to score Jones, but BRCC would answer with a pair of runs in the seventh to temporarily regain the lead.
LSUE jumped back in front in the bottom of the frame as a sacrifice fly from Jack Merrifield and RBI singles by Jones and Cole Romero gave the Bengals the lead for good. Thomas Stevens would add an insurance run on a fielder's choice in the eighth.
Austin Andrishok picked up the win, combining with Jake Hammond to squash the Bear bats once the Bengals took the lead for good. Andrishok (5-0) tossed two innings of relief, scattering two earned runs off four hits. Hammond grabbed his fourth save of the season after striking out three batters in the ninth around a walk.
Jones and Kirsch each had three-hit games, Jones driving in three runs and scoring twice.
Game 2 vs. Baton Rouge CC – L, 0-11
LSU Eunice allowed a five run first inning and could never recover, falling 11-0 in five innings against BRCC.
The Bears saw their first six batters reach base safely in the opening inning, capitalizing on two walks and two batters hit by pitch. BRCC would see its lead expand to 10-0 after three innings, using a four-run third.
The LSUE bats could not get going, being limited to just five hits, leaving five batters on base.
