EUNICE, La. – It took 98 minutes, but the goal was worth the wait for LSU Eunice Women's Soccer.
Citlaly Santibanez (Dallas, TX, Wylie HS) sent her teammates into a frenzy as the freshman netted the golden goal in overtime to deliver the Bengals a 1-0 victory over Mississippi Gulf Coast on Friday.
"We did just about everything we wanted to do all game except put it in the net," LSU Eunice Women's Soccer head coach Ian McGimsey said. "I was really proud of the ladies' determination to get that game winner and have some positive momentum going forward."
Santibanez's game winner was the result of a great technical work from
Giovanna Do Amaral (Ascoli Piceno, Italy, Monteverde Academy (FL)). The freshman midfielder took a throw-in on the offensive end, evaded a pair of defenders before lofting a ball into the box. Santibanez corralled the pass, touched towards the middle before bouncing a low shot to the back corner of the net.
All this after LSUE dominated from start to finish. The Bengals possessed the ball 62 percent of the time, connected on 74 percent of their passes, outshot the Bulldogs and won the corner kick battle 19-0.
LSUE would put seven shots on frame with a couple of near goals in the second half. The Bengals would dodge a bullet midway through the second half as
Gabrielle Felix (Lafayette, LA, Acadiana HS) cleared out the ball inside the goal area with an open net.
Avery Wright (Temple, TX, Salado HS) grabbed the clean sheet after collecting four saves in the victory.
The Bengals will travel to Tyler JC on Wednesday, August 25. First kick from east Texas is scheduled for 5:00PM.
