EUNICE, La. –
Jalen Mitchell (St. Martinville, LA, St. Martinville HS) poured in 11 of his 14 points in a critical second half stretch as LSU Eunice rallied to take down Baton Rouge CC 70-68 on Wednesday at the HPRE Center. The Bengals (9-6 overall, 1-0 LCCAC) erased a 15-point second half deficit to defeat the Bears for the seventh straight time.
The Bengals opened cold from the floor to start, spotting BRCC at 14-point halftime lead, 42-28. LSUE would come alive after intermission, shooting 18-for-28 (64.2%) from the floor in the second half including 14-for-16 from inside the three-point arc.
Mitchell got the Bengals to within striking distance nearly by himself. The freshman scored eight points during a 10-0 run to erase a 12-point deficit midway through the half. The guard converted a four-point play after a made three-point basket with 9:04 to play to make it a 55-53 contest.
The St. Martinville product finished with 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting including 3-for-4 from downtown.
Another freshman,
Bryce Roberts (Bossier City, LA, Parkway HS), would tie the game 56-56 a few minutes later, followed by
John Kenoye's (Port Harcourt, Nigeria, Lee Academy (ME)) basket underneath the hoop gave LSUE a temporary lead.
The Bengals and Bears would go back and forth down the stretch as BRCC tied the game, 68-68, on a dunk with 1:40 to play.
Magok Manyang (Adelaide, Australia, Trinity College HS) would seal the win in the final minute, backing down a defender before a hook shot with 42.6 second left fell in. Manyang pumped in 12 points and 6 rebounds.
Isaiah Payne (Ville Platte, LA, Pine Prairie HS) led LSUE in the scoring column with a game-high 16 points, 12 coming in the second half.
