EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice Men's Basketball overcame a slow start to race past Angelina College in a 58-48 victory on Tuesday at the HPRE Center. The win gives the Bengals (6-0) a perfect four-game homestand as LSUE ventures to Florida this weekend for the Chipola College Classic.
The Bengals shot an uncharacteristic 29.4% from the floor (10-for-34) in the first half to trail 31-26 at the break. LSUE would more than make up for it, coming out on fire with a 14-2 run to take the lead for good against the Roadrunners.
Seviuhn Turner (Baton Rouge, LA, Madison Prep Academy) would light the spark for LSUE, draining a corner three-point basket then causing one of his three steals that would lead to a
Bryce Roberts (Bossier City, LA, Parkway HS) bucket. The Bengals collected 16 steals on the night, turning 25 Angelina turnovers into 21 points.
Turner would provide the exclamation point in the pivotal run, throwing down an emphatic transition dunk over an Angelina defender. The freshman joined forced with
Nasir DeGruy (New Orleans, LA, St. Augustine HS) to lead LSUE points with 11 points each.
Roberts would be the other Bengal score double digit points with 10 on the night.
LSUE would have to fight off a feisty Angelina team late as the Bengals' lead would shrink to four points, 46-42, late.
Kiani Saxon (Auckland, New Zealand, Liston College) would help squash the momentum with a two-handed jam with 5:02 left, triggering a 9-0 run to put the game away.
The Bengals will test themselves in the Sunshine State over the Thanksgiving holiday with a pair of ranked opponents in the Chipola Classic. LSUE will face off with No. 13 Tallahassee on Friday, followed by a Saturday matchup against No. 4 Chipola College.
