No. 2 LSUE Takes Offensive Shootout In Monroe Opener

EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice Baseball used a critical six-run inning to push past Monroe College in an offensive showcase 12-7 on Thursday at Bengal Stadium.  LSUE (7-0) and Monroe combined for 19 hits and 26 hits with most of the offensive production coming in the second half of the game.

LSUE held a 3-0 lead going into the fifth inning as Bengals starting pitcher Blake Lobell (Holden, LA, Springfield HS) worked four perfect innings.  The Mustangs would wake up, plating five unanswered runs to take the lead and chase Lobell going into the bottom half of the sixth inning.  A pitching changed for Monroe also sparked the LSUE bats as the Bengals took the lead for good on a Monroe reliever, scoring six runs in the sixth inning.

After a leadoff ground out to begin the big frame, LSUE's next six batters produced a base hit sparked by Dawson Willis (Ruston, LA, Ruston HS) belting a two-run triple to tie the game, 5-5.  Tyson LeBlanc (Maurice, LA, North Vermilion HS) and Weston Fulk (Ankeny, IA, Ankeny HS) followed suit with RBI hits before an error and a sacrifice fly capped the scoring in the inning.

The Bengals weren't out of danger just yet as Monroe would creep to within 9-7 thanks to a pair of runs in the seventh.  LSUE, again, answered the bell as the Bengals scored three runs in the eighth as back-to-back bases loaded walks were followed by a Reese Ashworth sacrifice fly to make it 12-7.

Five different Bengals had a multi-hit game as Willis, LeBlanc, Collin Husser (Ponchatoula, LA, Ponchatoula HS), Bennett Clement (St. Francisville, LA, West Feliciana HS) and Andrew Lee (Lafayette, LA, Ascension Episcopal HS) paced the 14-hit output.

Liam Watt (Burlington, Ontario, Canada, Nelson HS) picked up the win after 1.1 innings of relief.  Watt was joined by Collier Barham (Baton Rouge, LA, University Lab HS) and Will Mabry (St. Joseph, LA, Tensas Academy) out of the bullpen as they combined with Blake Lobell for 11 strikeouts in the game.

LSUE continues its series with Monroe College on Friday with a 5:00PM first pitch from Bengal Stadium.
