EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice Baseball kept its winning ways rolling as the Bengals cruised to a pair of wins over Garrett College on Saturday at Bengal Stadium. LSUE improved to 20-0 on the season for the second consecutive season and the third time in the last five years.
The big inning was again the key to the Bengals' success against the Lakers. LSUE struck for five runs in a frame during LSUE's 8-1 opener over Garrett, followed by an eight-run outburst during the Bengals' 13-1 mercy rule decision.
LSU Eunice closes out the weekend series with Garrett College on Sunday with a 1:00PM first pitch from Bengal Stadium.
Game 1 vs. Garrett College -W, 8-1
LSU Eunice used early offense and an
Alec Beversdorf (Seabrook, TX, Clear Falls HS) gem to take an 8-1 victory over Garrett College to start Saturday's doubleheader.
Beversdorf turned in one of the best pitching performances of the season, striking out 13 batters over 5.1 innings of work. The freshman punched out the first five batters he faced, sitting down the side in order by strikeout twice. Beversdorf gave up one earned run in the fifth inning, while scattering three hits and not allowing a walk.
Alex Dupuy (Natchitoches, LA, Natchitoches Central HS) and
Parker Morgan (Lake Charles, LA, St. Louis Catholic HS) shut down the Lakers for the remainder of the game, giving up a combined three hits in 1.2 innings of relief.
LSUE was quick to work on the offensive end as
Collin Husser (Ponchatoula, LA, Ponchatoula HS) drove in
Dawson Willis (Ruston, LA, Ruston HS) on a sacrifice fly in the opening inning. The Bengals added five more runs in the second, using four hits in the frame with Husser's two-out two-run double providing the biggest punch of the frame.
Weston Fulk (Ankeny, IA, Ankeny HS) drove in two runs in the sixth to cap off the Bengals scoring. Husser led the way with three RBI game, giving him seven RBIs in the Garrett College series so far.
Game 2 vs. Garrett College – W, 13-1 (Seven Innings)
LSU Eunice won its 12th game of the year by run rule as the Bengals cruised past Garrett College 13-1 in seven innings. LSUE, the top run scoring offense in the nation, produced double digit runs for the 13th time this season.
The Bengals found themselves locked in a 1-1 game in the fourth inning when LSUE was able to break loose for eight runs in the inning. LSUE only needed two hits in the frame, capitalizing on five free passes and three errors. Those two hits would pack a punch as
Tyler Johnson (Kenner, LA, Brother Martin HS) drove in a pair on a double and
Evan Joubert (Lake Charles, LA, St. Louis Catholic HS) unloaded the bases with a two-out three-run double.
LSUE would induce the mercy rule with four more runs in the fifth, two coming off wild pitches and a pair from bases loaded free passes.
The combination of
Sawyer Simmons (Bossier City, LA, Benton HS) and
Parker Webb (Fayetteville, TN, Lincoln County HS) totaled 14 strikeouts in the shortened game. Simmons grabbed his first collegiate win, going five innings with nine punch outs while Webb added five over two perfect relief innings.
