EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice Softball saw its regular season home slate come to a close on Monday with a doubleheader split against San Jacinto College. The Bengals (33-9) went 26-4 at Lady Bengal Field during the regular season, the most home wins on the Cajun Prairie in more than a decade.
The 26 home wins are the most since the 2014 NJCAA National Championship team took 29 games inside their friendly confines.
LSU Eunice used an explosive offense and
Reagan Rios' (Longview, TX, Longview HS) complete game to down the Ravens 9-1 in the opener before falling 3-0 in the finale.
The Bengals now set their sights on a regular season ending 13-game road trip beginning Friday with a return trip to San Jacinto. The doubleheader will kick off from Houston, Texas at 2:00PM.
Game 1 vs. San Jacinto College – W, 9-1 (Five Innings)
The Bengal offense struck early and often as LSU Eunice delivered a 9-1 mercy rule win in five innings over San Jacinto. It was LSUE's 15th run-rule win of the season, the most in a single season for the Bengals under head coach Meghan Collins.
LSUE exploded for four runs in the second inning, all coming with two outs.
Sina Ballew (Pineville, LA, Buckeye HS) kick started the big frame with a RBI double over the left fielder's head.
Rylie Tate (Columbia, LA, Caldwell Parish HS),
Sara Roussel (Luling, LA, Hahnville HS) and
Gracee Hess (Belle Chasse, LA, Belle Chasse HS) followed with consecutive run scoring hits.
San Jacinto answered with its lone run of the game in the third but the Bengals were quick to respond with a pair of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
The Bengals put the run-rule into effect with three more runs in the fourth inning as pinch hitters
Gracie Bailey (Watson, LA, Live Oak HS) and
Gabrielle Huetter (Magnolia, TX, Magnolia HS) connected to push the LSUE lead to 9-1.
Nine different players had at least one hit with Hess and Ballew managing multi-hit games.
Reagan Rios improved to 12-5 on the season with another complete game effort. Rios gave up the one earned run off six hits and three walks while striking out three batters.
Game 2 vs. San Jacinto College – L, 0-3
LSU Eunice could not find an answer for San Jacinto pitcher Maddy Carr as the Bengals fell 3-0 in the Monday doubleheader finale.
LSUE pitcher
McKenna Howell (Pollock, LA, Grant HS) went toe-to-toe with Carr as the two teams were scoreless through four innings. The Ravens were able to get on the board with a two-out two run single in the fifth inning and followed it up with another two-out run in the sixth inning.
The Bengals had a chance to get on the board in the fifth inning as
Reagan Duty (Mont Belvieu, TX, Barbers Hill HS) reached base off the lone San Jacinto error to lead off the inning. Pinch runner
Lindsey Burnett (Thorsby, AL, Thorsby HS) would steal second base, but LSUE could not convert the runner in scoring position after a pair of strikeouts and a fly out.
LSUE would also have a two-out walk but could not advance the runner any further.
