EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice's
Blake Lobell (Holden, LA, Springfield HS) and
Liam Watt (Burlington, Ontario, Canada, Nelson HS) will dawn the Stars and Stripes for Team USA at this year's Haarlem Baseball Week held July 12-19, the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) announced on Tuesday. The NJCAA will field an All-Star team comprised of 24 student-athletes from 16 different NJCAA institutions.
Team USA will begin its five-game schedule on July 12 against The Netherlands.
LSU Eunice head coach Jeff Willis, currently the NJCAA Baseball Coaches Association President, will serve as the General Manager of Team USA, having worked with the Team USA Coaching Staff to create this summer's roster. The coaching staff consists of head coach Marty Smith (Central Florida) and assistants Mike Davenport (Madison College) and Rob Valli (RCSJ Gloucester).
The tournament is based at Pim Mullier Stadium in Haarlem, the capital of the province of North Holland just outside Amsterdam. This will be the 31st edition of the amateur invitational which began in 1961. This year's Haarlem Baseball Week field includes The Kingdom of the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Japan, Chinese Taipei and the United States.
Lobell, recently named a NJCAA Division II First Team All-American, is one of nine 2024 NJCAA All-Americans on the roster. The NJCAA Division II World Series All-Tournament selection led the team and all of the NJCAA with 129 strikeouts, the third most in a single season in LSUE history. Lobell would record five double-digit strikeout games, including a stretch from mid-March to early April that saw him punchout 10+ batters in four of five starts.
The Southeastern Louisiana pledge held a 14-0 record, second most in wins in the NJCAA, behind teammate Owen Schexnaydre, adding a 2.04 earned run average, tossing three complete games in 101.2 innings.
Joining him is the Canadian import Watt on this NJCAA-based All-Star team. The southpaw was a dynamic arm in the Bengal bullpen, making 21 appearances and nine starts. Watt finished the season with a 7-2 record, adding 73 strikeouts and a 2.88 earned run average.
The Charleston Southern signee saved his best for last, earning the Most Valuable Pitcher award at the NJCAA Division II World Series. Watt notched a pair of wins in three appearances during LSUE's title run in Enid. He sported a 1.17 ERA in 7.2 innings pitched including a 3.2 outing to earn the win in the Championship Game.
The last time the NJCAA All-Stars represented Team USA was in 2010. Jeff Willis served as the head coach of that team with former Bengals Zach Kirksey and Raph Rhymes on the squad. Team USA finished fourth in the tournament with the Netherlands winning one of their five all-time Baseball Week Championships.
The last time Team USA won Haarlem Baseball was in 2014 with a squad featuring future MLB players Alex Bregman, Dansby Swanson and Bryan Reynolds among others.
