No. 9 LSUE Takes Pair of Opening Day Games

CROWLEY, La. – LSU Eunice Baseball began the 2025 season much like it has every year under Jeff Willis – in winning form.  The Bengals captured a pair of games on Opening Day, taking its 22nd straight season opener under the longtime head coach.

LSUE used a pair of Grand Slams to take down North Lake College 13-6 in the maiden voyage of this 2025 campaign, followed by a 4-1 victory to close out the day against Arkansas State University-Mountain Home.  Both games were part of a tripleheader of action between the three teams at Fezzo's Field in Crowley.

The Bengals are playing their first few weeks of home action in the Rice City while construction continues at the new Bengal Stadium.

LSU Eunice closes out the weekend on Sunday with an 11:00AM first pitch against Arkansas State University-Mountain Home at Miller Stadium.

Jan. 25 vs. North Lake College – W, 13-6
LSUE used a pair of big innings to propel itself past North Lake College 13-6 in the first game of the 2025 season.  The Bengals were powered by a pair of grand slams to post their first double-digit run output of the campaign.

Jackson Legg (Shreveport, LA, Calvary Baptist HS) played a big role early on for LSUE, chopping an infield single in the first to score Alex Dupuy (Natchitoches, LA, Natchitoches Central HS) to give the Bengals the first run of the game.  The Blazers answered with a two-run home run in the top of the second to take a short-lived advantage.

Legg and the Bengals responded in a big way with a six-run second inning.  After Ashton Fuselier (Lake Charles, LA, Sam Houston HS) helped LSUE take the lead again for good with a two-run double, the sophomore Legg tattooed a grand slam to straight away center to put the Bengals up 7-2.

After NLC tacked on two more runs, LSUE went on another big offensive run.  Dupuy would single home Aidan Mouton (Rayne, LA, Notre Dame HS) in the fifth, setting up a big blast from Mouton.  The outfielder cleared a stock pond with another grand slam to push LSUE ahead 13-4.  The Blazers scored two more runs in the final inning of the seven-inning contest.

Mouton led LSUE with a 3-for-4 game, driving in the four RBIs and scoring three times.  Legg and Dupuy added multi-hit outings in the Bengals' 10-hit attack.

Will Mabry, IV (St. Joseph, LA, Tensas Academy) picked up the win as the opening day starting pitcher, tossing 3.2 innings.  Mabry scattered four runs, three earned, off a walk and four strike outs while yielding five hits.  Hudson Spangler (Zachary, LA, Zachary HS) impressed in relief, totaling 2.1 scoreless innings of work while Alex Morrison (Pineville, LA, Tioga HS) closed out the action on the hill.

Jan. 25 vs. ASU-Mountain Home – W, 4-1
The LSUE pitching staff shined in the opening day nightcap, guiding the Bengals to a 4-1 decision over ASU-Mountain Home.

The Bengal arms totaled 18 strikeouts over the game, giving up just four hits while not allowing a free pass.  Alec Beversdorf (Seabrook, TX, Clear Falls HS) set the tone with four innings of one-hit action in the start.  The sophomore rang up six of the first seven batters he faced, giving up a two-out single in the fourth.

Xavier Woods (Cleveland, TX, Cleveland HS) took over from there, punching out eight batters in three innings of work.  The freshman gave up a solo home run in the seventh, the lone Trail Blazer run of the game.  Reese Ashworth (DeQuincy, LA, DeQuincy HS) picked up his first save of the season, tossing two perfect innings with three strikeouts.

Tyson LeBlanc (Maurice, LA, North Vermilion HS) got the scoring started with a solo home run in the third inning before the Bengals manufactured three runs in the fourth off two bases loaded walks and steal of home by Aidan Mouton.
