EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice Softball continues its hot start to open the season with a doubleheader sweep of Bossier Parish on Friday at Lady Bengal Field. The Bengals (7-1) played the first of 11 home twinbills on the Cajun Prairie.
LSUE started on fire to begin the day, using early offense in a 5-0 win over Bossier Parish, followed by a come-from-behind 8-4 decision to end the day with the Cavaliers.
Hadley Lemons (Kinder, LA, Kinder HS) connected on a team-high four hits in the doubleheader, while LSUE used back-to-back complete games by
Reagan Rios (Longview, TX, Longview HS) and
Erika Savage (Kingwood, TX, Kingwood Park HS) in the circle.
The Bengals hit the road on Monday to face Alvin Community College before traveling next weekend to Gulf Shores for the Sun Chief Classic.
Game 1 vs. Bossier Parish – W, 5-0
LSUE got all the offense it needed in its first two at-bats as the Bengals used big hits and a Reagan Rios gem to preserve a 5-0 win over Bossier Parish.
The Bengal bats got going in a hurry, using four straight two-out hits to jump out to a 4-0 lead.
Jadyn Yesso (Houma, LA, Houma Christian HS) began the quick surge with a single up the middle, followed by three straight doubles from Hadley Lemons,
McKenna Howell (Pollock, LA, Grant HS) and
Gracie Higginbotham (Sulphur, LA, Sulphur HS).
Payton Prince (Sulphur, LA, Sulphur HS) capped the offense with a towering solo home run in the second inning. She was joined by Lemons and Howell with multi-hit games.
That was more than enough for Rios, who picked up where she left off after a fantastic freshman campaign. The sophomore ace threw her 14th career complete game, while pitching her third shutout in a Bengal uniform. Rios gave up two hits and three walks while striking out five batters. She would retire nine batters in a row at one point in the game.
Game 2 vs. Bossier Parish – W, 8-4
LSUE spotted Bossier Parish an early lead before finishing with a flurry, scoring an 8-4 win to end the doubleheader with the Cavaliers.
The Bengals jumped ahead 2-0 in the second inning behind a two-out two RBI double by
Makinley Harris (Denham Springs, LA, Denham Springs HS). BPCC answered with a four-run third, all coming on a two-out grand slam.
Erika Savage would shut down the Cavaliers from there, tossing her second complete game of the season. Savage worked around four hits and two walks while striking out a batter. After the grand slam, the freshman retired 13 of the last 15 batters she faced in order.
LSUE responded with a four-run inning of its own in the fourth, as the freshman duo of
Ciara Orgeron (Stonewall, LA, North Desoto HS) and Harris provided the offensive punch. Orgeron laced a RBI double to left field before Harris launched a three-run home run to center. Harris led LSUE with a game-high five RBIs in the game. She was joined by Hadley Lemons and
Corin Waguespack (Gonzales, LA, East Ascension HS) with multi-hit games in LSUE's 12-hit attack.
After working a bases loaded walk to push the LSUE lead to 7-4,
Kate Rills (Gonzales, LA, East Ascension HS) added an insurance run in the sixth on a RBI single up the middle.
