EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice had a flair for the dramatic on Wednesday, using late offense against Tyler JC in a doubleheader at Lady Bengal Field. The Bengals (26-6) split the day of games, coming close to taking both in improbable fashion.
In game one, the Bengals crawled out of a five-run deficit in the sixth to tie the game before falling 10-8. LSUE scored five two-out runs in its last at bat to cap an impressive 12-11 come from behind win to close out the doubleheader with the Apache.
LSU Eunice heads back on the road this weekend for a Saturday, March 15 twinbill at National Park College beginning at 1:00PM.
Game 1 vs. Tyler Junior College – L, 8-10
The Bengals plated five runs in the sixth inning to tie Tyler JC late, but its early hole was too much to overcome in a 10-8 setback to the Apache.
LSUE found itself trailing 5-0 after the Apache struck for a four-run second inning. The Bengals would chip away with a three-run fourth, using a bases loaded hit by pitch and scoring two runs off TJC's lone error of the game.
Tyler answered with three more runs in the sixth to build an 8-3 advantage. LSUE fought right back, plating five runs with two outs.
Makinzey Elisar (Prairieville, LA, St. Amant HS) began the rally with a RBI single on a ground ball to second, followed by a two-run double by
Kate Rills (Gonzales, LA, East Ascension HS).
Jadyn Yesso (Houma, LA, Houma Christian HS) brought home two more runs a batter later with a double of her own, but LSUE could not get a go ahead run.
The Apache went back ahead in the seventh with two a pair of two out doubles. LSUE would go down in order in its final at bat. The Bengals had a golden opportunity early to get on the board, leaving the bases loaded in the second.
Game 2 vs. Tyler Junior College – W, 12-11
LSUE would complete a come from behind rally in the finale, striking for five runs in the final inning to take a dramatic 12-11 victory.
The Bengals were down to their final out when
Payton Prince (Sulphur, LA, Sulphur HS) kept hope alive with a two-run home run, making it 11-9. After a Kate Rills single and one of five Tyler JC errors, the bases were loaded for
McKenna Howell (Pollock, LA, Grant HS). The sophomore swung at the first pitch she saw, lofting a fly ball down the right field line that would bring all three base runners to score and set off the celebration.
Corin Waguespack (Gonzales, LA, East Ascension HS) began the late charge two innings earlier, launching a towering two-run home run to straight away center to cut into what was a seven-run hole. Tyler JC took the lead with a nine-run fifth inning.
The two sides went back and forth early, as both teams plated a pair of runs in the opening inning. LSUE took the lead with two manufactured sacrifice RBIs by Makinzey Elisar in the second and fourth innings.
Prince led the Bengals with a 3-for-4 game, driving in two runs and scoring twice. Elisar, Rills and Howell each had multi-hit games in LSUE's 13-hit attack.
Erika Savage (Kingwood, TX, Kingwood Park HS) settled down LSUE in the circle, pitching 2.1 innings of no-hit relief to pick up the win. The freshman struck out three batters while working around a walk.
