CHALMETTE, La. – LSU Eunice Baseball took control early in both games against Nunez CC on Sunday, sweeping the LCCAC doubleheader at Noel Suarez Stadium. The Bengals (34-1, 6-0 LCCAC) secured their eight series sweep of the season while staying atop the LCCAC standings.
LSUE produced a well-rounded offensive attack with 11 different players recording at least a base hit in the two seven-inning games. The Bengals used four-run second inning in the opener on their way to a 9-1 victory, followed by a six-spot in the third inning of their series finale to score an 11-4 decision.
The Bengals continue their season-long 12-game road swing with a Tuesday, April 1 doubleheader at Centenary College beginning at 3:00PM. LSUE heads to Delgado CC next weekend for its next LCCAC series.
Game 1 vs. Nunez CC – W, 9-1
LSU Eunice picked up where it left off on Saturday, racing out to a 5-0 lead and never looking back during a 9-1 win to start the Sunday doubleheader. The Bengals used a four-run second to build a comfortable lead for starting pitcher
Xavier Woods (Cleveland, TX, Cleveland HS).
Will Mabry, IV (St. Joseph, LA, Tensas Academy) put the Bengals on the board in the first inning, scoring on a first-and-third steal. LSUE would then turn to the long ball as
Tyler Mitchell (Marrero, LA, John Curtis HS) smashed a second inning grand slam to push its lead to 5-0. It was Mitchell's first home run of the season, the 15th different Bengal to hit a home run this season.
After Nunez scored its lone run off a solo home run in the second, Mabry would produce three RBIs in his next two at bats. The sophomore lifted a two-run long ball in the fourth and a sacrifice fly in the sixth to add to LSUE's 8-1 lead.
Tyson LeBlanc (Maurice, LA, North Vermilion HS) brought home the final run of the game with a RBI single later in the inning.
Woods would nearly go the distance, tossing 6.2 innings to earn his fifth win of the season. The southpaw scattered five hits and two walks while striking out three batters.
Peyton Beck (Ruston, LA, Ruston HS) secured the final out of the game with a punchout.
Game 2 vs. Nunez CC – W, 11-4
The Bengals overcame an early hole, striking for six runs in the third inning during an 11-4 win in the Sunday finale against Nunez CC.
LSUE found itself with an early deficit thanks to a solo home run by Nunez in the opening inning and two runs in its next at bat. The Bengals responded in a big way, using seven hits and two walks to bring home the six runs.
The first nine batters reached base safely in the inning with Tyson LeBlanc getting the Bengals on the board with a RBI double. He would score a batter later as
Jackson Legg (Shreveport, LA, Calvary Baptist HS) smashed a two-run home run to tie the game, 3-3.
Milan Obradovich (Tuscaloosa, AL, Northridge HS) produced the go ahead run on a single. Tyler Mitchell and
Aidan Mouton (Rayne, LA, Notre Dame HS) drove in runs on RBI base hits.
The offense would plate four more insurance runs in its final at bat with Mouton connecting on a two-run single followed by
Mason Bordelon (Marksville, LA, Avoyelles Charter HS) lifting a two-run home run.
Mouton was joined by Legg, Obradovich and Mitchell with multi-hit games as LSUE produced 13 hits as a team.
It was a group effort on the mound with the Bengals cycling through five different pitchers in the win.
Reese Ashworth (DeQuincy, LA, DeQuincy HS) was credited with the victory, tossing 3.1 innings in relief. The sophomore gave up one unearned run off five hits and a strikeout.
