LSUE Rolls Baton Rouge CC On Sophomore Day

EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice Softball put together a complete performance on Saturday, scoring a pair of run-rule shutouts over Baton Rouge CC.  The wins were the final home games of the regular season for the Bengals (36-8), the last on the Cajun Prairie for the team's seven sophomores.

LSUE jumped out to a ten-run first inning and never looked back, taking the first game of the day 10-0.  The victory marked the 200th career win for head coach Meghan Collins, all coming at LSUE.  The Bengals would close out the day with an 8-0 win over the Bears.

The Bengals hit the road for the final eight games of the regular season, beginning Tuesday, March 15 against Baton Rouge CC.

Game 1 vs. Baton Rouge CC – W, 10-0 (Five Innings)
LSU Eunice used a big opening inning to storm past Baton Rouge CC 10-0 to open the day's action.  The Bengals' 10-run inning is the team's largest single inning of offense since erupting for 11 runs in a 17-1 win over Dillard University last season.

LSUE used 11 base hits in its opening inning to take the commanding advantage.  Kate Rills (Gonzales, LA, East Ascension HS) and McKenna Howell (Pollock, LA, Grant HS) had a pair of run producing at bats while Payton Prince (Sulphur, LA, Sulphur HS) blasted a solo home run.  Hadley Lemons (Kinder, LA, Kinder HS), Kamryn Howard (Iowa, LA, Iowa HS), and Gracie Higginbotham (Sulphur, LA, Sulphur HS) also had a hand in the offense with RBI base hits in the inning.

Prince, Howell, and Lemons all had multi-hit games in LSUE's 13-hit attack.

Reagan Rios (Longview, TX, Longview HS) and Cate Nettles (Slidell, LA, Slidell HS) combined for the five inning shutout, giving up just four hits and one walk combined.  Rios improved to 13-3 on the season, sitting down the Bears in order in the third.

Game 2 vs. Baton Rouge CC – W, 8-0 (Six Innings)
Alyssa Boutte (Erath, LA, Erath HS) went the distance for a second consecutive outing, blanking Baton Rouge CC in an 8-0 win to close out the day's action.  Boutte tossed the team's third complete game shut out of the season, the other coming from Reagan Rios.

The sophomore retired the first seven batters she faced, putting the Bears down in order in four of the six innings she pitched.  Boutte improved to 6-0 on the season, giving up two hits and striking out a pair while not issuing a free pass.

LSUE would get the only offense it needed in the second inning with Alyssa Lewis (Brazoria, TX, West Columbia HS) scoring on an executed double steal on a first-and-third situation.  The Bengals pushed across another run in the third on a sacrifice bunt by Hadley Lemons.

The offense would finally ramp up in the later innings, scoring two runs in each of their final three at bats.  Payton Prince began that surge with a RBI single in the fourth, followed by LSUE plating a run thanks to one of five BRCC errors.

Corin Waguespack (Gonzales, LA, East Ascension HS) and Gracie Higginbotham drove in two more runs an later to make it 6-0 LSU Eunice.  The Bengals would induce the mercy rule in the sixth after Bella Halata (Friendswood, TX, Friendswood HS) and Kamryn Howard knocked in one run each.

Prince and Waguespack enjoyed multi-hit games, part of LSUE's 10-hit attack.
