Pitching Guides LSUE To Road Sweep At Angelina

LUFKIN, Texas – LSU Eunice Softball used a pair of strong outings in the circle to take a road doubleheader sweep of Angelina College on Wednesday.  The Bengals (33-7) completed the season sweep of the Roadrunners after taking a home twin bill earlier this season.

Ava Kordish (Bayou Chicot, LA, Pine Prairie HS) gave LSUE solid innings in the opening game, helping LSUE take a 5-3 opener over Angelina.  Alyssa Boutte (Erath, LA, Erath HS) followed that up with her first complete game of the season in an 8-3 finale.

LSUE heads back out to Texas this weekend for a Friday, April 4 doubleheader against San Jacinto College.  The Bengals return to the Cajun Prairie next weekend for their final home games of the regular season, hosting Lamar State College on April 11 and Baton Rouge CC on April 12.

Game 1 vs. Angelina College – W, 5-3
Early offense and a solid pitching performance by Ava Kordish helped guide LSU Eunice to a 5-3 opener against Angelina College.  The Bengals raced out to an early five-run lead before holding off a late surge by the Roadrunners.

Jadyn Yesso (Houma, LA, Houma Christian HS) put the Bengals on the board in the opening inning, smacking a two-run home to left field, her second homer of the season.  LSUE would strike for three more runs in the fourth, using a Hadley Lemons (Kinder, LA, Kinder HS) RBI double and one of two Angelina errors that crossed two runs.

Ava Kordish kept Angelina at bay for most of the game, holding the Roadrunners scoreless in the first five innings.  The freshman faced traffic in the sixth, yielding three runs off five hits.  She would get out of the jam, giving way to Erika Savage (Kingwood, TX, Kingwood Park HS) in the final inning.  Savage worked around a lead off single, picking up her third save of the season.

Kordish improved to 11-2 on the season after scattering eight hits and issuing two walks.  She would tie her season-high with six strikeouts.

Offensively, Corin Waguespack (Gonzales, LA, East Ascension HS) was the lone Bengal to post a multi-hit game with LSUE recording six hits.

Game 2 vs. Angelina College, W, 8-3
Alyssa Boutte tossed her first complete game of the season to lead LSU Eunice to an 8-3 finale over Angelina College.  The win secured the Bengals' 12th doubleheader sweep of the season.

Both teams would scratch a run in the opening inning, LSUE using a McKenna Howell (Pollock, LA, Grant HS) fielder's choice to bring home Kate Rills (Gonzales, LA, East Ascension HS).  Angelina would take a temporary 3-1 lead in the third, connecting on a two-out, two-run double.

Boutte keep Angelina down the final four innings, retiring 12 of the final 14 batters she faced.  The sophomore gave up six hits and two walks while striking out three batters, throwing 99 pitches in the seven-inning outing.

The pitcher would also help her own cause on the basepaths, scoring the go-ahead run in the fifth.  After LSUE executed a first-and-third steal opportunity in the fourth and Howell drove in her second RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly to tie the game 3-3, Boutte would steal home after avoiding a pick-off attempt at third base.

LSUE would add valuable insurance runs late starting with a sixth inning RBI single by Corin Waguespack.  The Bengals plated three more in the seventh inning, using a sacrifice grounder by Jade Fischtzuir (Covington, LA, Covington HS), one of six Angelina errors and a passed ball.

Waguespack capped off a breakout day, collecting three more hits to total five on the day.  She was joined by Makinzey Elisar (Prairieville, LA, St. Amant HS), Jadyn Yesso and Ciara Orgeron (Stonewall, LA, North Desoto HS) with multi-hit games.
