EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice Women's Basketball could not overcome an early hole, falling to Jones College 81-74 on Friday. The Bengals (0-1) played the first of 14 home games inside the HPRE Center this season.
LSUE and Jones went back-and-forth for much of the evening, with an early spurt by the Bobcats proving to be the separator between the teams. The Bengals led 14-12 midway through the first quarter, before a 12-0 run by the Bobcats put them ahead for good.
The Bengals would inch back to within a few possessions but could not string along a big run of their own.
Edurne Diaz de la Serna Munoz (Ripollet, Spain, Institut Palau Ausit) knocked down one of her team-high four three-point baskets with under 10 seconds left in the half to trim the game to 44-37 at intermission. Diaz was one of two Bengals to record double digit points, pouring in 16.
The Bengals fell behind as many as 15 points in the third quarter, clawing back to within a few possessions down the stretch.
Reesie Jinks (Grant, LA, Fairview HS) scored 18 of her game-high 28 points in the second half including 11-of-12 from the free throw line. Jinks added six assists, while
Logan Cookmeyer (Walker, LA, Walker HS) and
Kamryn Billiot-Jones (Humble, TX, Atascocita HS) led the team with six rebounds each.
The LSUE defense forced 26 turnovers, including 11 steals. Cookmeyer led the team with four steals.
Jones had four players score double digit points including 25 from Jakera Ducksworth.
LSU Eunice hits the road next week for a pair of road games at National Park College and UA-Cossatot before returning home Saturday, November 7 for an 11:00AM tip off against Florida Southwestern State.
