LSUE Splits Final Day With Kirkwood

EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice Softball took three of four games against Kirkwood over the weekend in a match up of two preseason ranked teams at Lady Bengal Field.  The No. 13 Bengals (9-2) split the final doubleheader on Sunday against No. 10 Kirkwood.

The Bengals used a similar formula from Saturday, getting early offense and a great outing in the pitching circle to take a 3-1 opener before falling 14-4 in the finale.

LSU Eunice is back at home this weekend against Jefferson College and Pearl River CC.

Game 1 vs. Kirkwood CC – W, 3-1

Erika Savage (Kingwood, TX, Kingwood Park HS) continued her early season success, tossing a complete game to guide the Bengals to a 3-1 win in Sunday's opener.  Savage picked up her fifth win of the season in her second complete game of the year.

The sophomore gave up one unearned run, working around four hits and four walks.  She would only strike out one batter but induced 18 fly outs and two groundouts.  Savage sat the Eagles down in order once.

The only offense for the Bengals would come in the third inning.  After a Mylie Elsensohn (Pearl River, LA, Pearl River HS) single, Makinzey Elisar (Prairieville, LA, St. Amant HS) drove her in with a single to left field.  Two batters later, Zoey Smith (Choudrant, LA, Choudrant HS) smashed a double to left field, plating a pair.

Game 2 vs. Kirkwood CC – L, 4-14

Early miscues were too much to overcome as LSU Eunice fell in the finale 14-4 to Kirkwood.  The Eagles raced out to a 9-1 lead before a late rally fell short.

The Bengals scored three runs in the fourth inning to claw back within striking distance, 9-4, after a bases loaded walk, Kadyn Schenk (Kentwood, LA, Jewel Sumner HS) RBI single, and Kobi Lam (Lafayette, LA, Southside HS) sacrifice ground out.  Kirkwood answered with five more runs to put the game out of reach.

Elsensohn led the Bengals' offense with two of the team's five hits.
