Bengals Fall, Winner Take All Game on Tuesday

WESTWEGO, La. – LSU Eunice Baseball suffered a 5-2 setback to Delgado CC on Sunday evening at Segnette Field.  The Bengals (43-10) will now play the Dolphins in the if necessary game of the LCCAC/Region 23 Tournament on Tuesday, May 12 with the winner advancing to the South District Championship Series.

LSUE found itself in an early hole after Delgado jumped out a 4-0 lead through three innings.  The Dolphins scratched across a run in the first, two runs in the second, and a run in the third.  The Bengals offense, meanwhile, could not find their footing early, managing just three hits and leaving six runners on base through the first four innings.

Jordan Luna (Washington, LA, Opelousas Catholic HS) gave the Bengals life in the fifth, leading off with an infield single.  Andrew Clapinski (Baton Rouge, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS) followed with a double with Luna scoring a batter later on an Aidan Mouton (Rayne, LA, Notre Dame HS) sacrifice grounder.  Milan Obradovich (Tuscaloosa, AL, Northridge HS) cut the LSUE deficit in half with a RBI single to left field before the Bengals left two more runners stranded in the inning.

It was all LSUE could muster as the Bengals managed just one base runner in the final four innings of play.

The Bengals bullpen kept hope alive for a late comeback.  Xavier Woods (Cleveland, TX, Cleveland HS) would go four innings, giving up two runs – one earned – off of three hits and a walk.  Mekai Gallien (Rosenberg, TX, Lamar Consolidated HS) issued one walk while all four outs registered were strikeouts.  Ian Carlson (Kingwood, TX, Kingwood HS) struck out two in an inning of relief while issuing a free pass.

LSU Eunice is 19-9 all-time in elimination games during Region Tournament play, and 4-3 in its history in winner-take-all Region Tournament Championships.
