EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice could not withstand a late charge by Shelton State, falling 14-6 on Thursday in the opener of the South District Championship Series at Bengals. The Bengals (44-11) trail the Buccaneers 1-0 in the best-of-three series.
LSU Eunice grabbed control of the game early, plating two runs in the first inning on a
Marshall Louque (Lutcher, LA, Lutcher HS) double. The Bengals were able to put two baserunners on board after the ball slipped out of the Shelton State first baseman on an
Aidan Mouton (Rayne, LA, Notre Dame HS) groundball.
Xavier Woods (Cleveland, TX, Cleveland HS) fended off Shelton State early, holding the Bucs scoreless through three innings. SSCC the first of four home runs in the fourth inning, a solo home run, to put its first run on the board. The Bucs scored in three straight innings to jump ahead to a 6-2 lead.
The Bengals clawed right back, scoring two runs in the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game 6-6. Louque added another RBI with a sixth inning single, followed by a
Tyler Mitchell (Marrero, LA, John Curtis HS) bouncer to left field that brought home another run.
Milan Obradovich (Tuscaloosa, AL, Northridge HS) added two more with a two-out single an inning later.
Shelton State seized control of the game for good in the eighth, capitalizing on four free passes and a grand slam. The Buccaneers added three more runs in the ninth.
Obradovich was the top Bengal bat with a 3-for-4 game, collecting two RBIs and two runs scored.
Woods collected six of the team's 15 strikeouts in his four innings of work to start the game. LSUE used eight pitchers in the game.
LSU Eunice and Shelton State will play game two of their series on Friday at 7:00PM.
