WESSON, Ms. – LSU Eunice jumped out an early lead but could hold off Southwest Mississippi, falling 9-4 on Monday. The setback eliminated LSU Eunice (34-17) from the Region 23 Tournament.
The Bengals seized the early momentum with a quick 3-0 lead through two innings.
Payton Prince (Sulphur, LA, Sulphur HS) smashed a solo home run off the left center light pole in the first inning before
Mylie Elsensohn (Pearl River, LA, Pearl River HS) ripped a two-run double an inning later. After the Bears punched back with a two-run home run in the third, LSUE responded thanks to an RBI double from
Ciara Orgeron (Stonewall, LA, North Desoto HS).
After the third inning, LSU Eunice would have difficulty finding the big hit. The Bengals went down in order in the fourth and fifth and came up empty handed with two runners in scoring position in the sixth. LSUE would again put its first two batters on base in the seventh, but a fly out and an infield fly and offensive interference ended the threat and the inning.
Southwest took the lead by scoring seven unanswered runs in the sixth and seventh inning which included three home runs.
Orgeron was the lone Bengal to have a multi-hit game with LSUE getting outhit 11-6.
