Former LSU Eunice Lady Bengal Doren Welsh, now at LSU, placed herself in the LSU record books during her first competition as a member of the Tigers’ track and field team on March 16.

Welsh, who was a member of the LSU Eunice Lady Bengal softball team last year, unleashed a throw of 153-2 on her very first javelin throw as a Tiger to win the women’s event at the Louisiana Classics meet.

The distance was enough to place her as the No. 8-ranked javelin thrower in school history.

“I was excited. I wasn’t expecting to do that well, but I put in a lot of hard work and was happy to see it pay off,” Welsh said.

Welsh was a four-year state championship qualifier in the javelin during her prep career at False River Academy and was crowned the state champion in the event during her senior season. She also is the school-record holder in the javelin at False River Academy.

She also played softball at False River Academy, where she was an all-state pitcher and was named the Most Valuable Player on the LHSAA East All-Star Team.

Last season at LSU Eunice, Welsh played infield and also saw time inside the circle, finishing with a .231 batting average and six RBI in 16 games played. On the rubber, she threw four innings for the Lady Bengals, finishing with a 1.75 ERA while holding opponents to a .143 batting average.

The Lady Bengals finished last season as NJCAA National Runners-Up with a 53-11 record.

“It was a fun time, I loved my teammates. I hated to finish the way we did but I wouldn’t change anything,” she said.

“It’s a great feeling knowing one of your former players has reached one of her goals,” LSU Eunice head coach Andy Lee said.

“It is a huge accomplishment to be in the LSU track and field record book with their storied history,” he added.

Welsh and the rest of her LSU track and field team next travel to compete in the Texas Relays March 28-30 before hosting the Battle on the Bayou on April 13 and the LSU Alumni Gold on April 20.

The Lady Bengal softball team is currently off before traveling for a pair of back-to-back road doubleheaders, first against Alvin Community College on April 4 before taking on San Jacinto Community College on April 5.
