NEW ORLEANS, La. – Rylie James sunk six free throws to set the new standard for points at the charity stripe as LSUE went wire-to-wire at Delgado CC, 70-50.
James went 6-for-7 from the line to surpass Jennifer Hicks' 188 free throws made in her Bengals career. The Basile native needed four free throws coming into LSU Eunice's regular season finale at Delgado. LSUE went 12-for-15 from the free throw line on the night.
The Bengals (22-3) held a slim 7-5 lead midway through the first quarter before closing the quarter on a 17-1 run. James scored 11 of her game-high 17 points in the first alone. LSUE turned up the heat in that first quarter, scoring 13 points off nine turnovers.
After Arianna Dargin's quick jumper gave the Bengals a 20-point cushion to start the second quarter, LSUE's lead hovered in the mid-teens with the Bengals taking a 34-22 edge into the locker rooms.
Dargin's transition lay-up helped the Bengals get back to a 20-point edge, 47-27, with 2:10 remaining in the third quarter. The freshman was one of three Bengals in double figures, joining James and Jaleya Gold's 12 points.
LSUE continued its dominance on the glass, outrebounding the Dolphins 56-22 with Bethany Broussard snaring a season's best 10 boards.
The Bengals now turn their attention to the Region 23 Tournament. LSUE will open first round play of the eight-team tournament next Tuesday, March 6. Their first round opponent at Mississippi College will be determined after the MACJC Tournament, which is currently underway.
