Holmes Gets Hot Late, Ends LSUE's Region 23 Stay

CLINTON, MS – LSU Eunice fought for nearly three quarters, but could not overcome the hot shooting duo of Kamelia Lacy and Aneisha Evans as the Bengals fell to Holmes 87-68 in the opening round of the Region 23 Tournament.  The Bengals finished the most successful season under head coach Amanda Clemons at 22-4.
 
LSUE and Holmes sparred for a majority of the game with nine ties and seven lead changes.  The Bengals threw out the first punch thanks to Sissy Saucier. The freshman scored the Bengals' first seven points as LSUE took an early 7-3 edge.
 
Saucier led the Bengals with 17 points on the night on 6-for-9 shooting including 3-for-4 from three-point range.
 
The two sides went back and forth for the first 20 minutes, heading into the locker rooms tied at 37-37.
 
The Bengals, again, held the early advantage to start the half.  Riley James' steal and lay-up capped off a 7-2 run to the begin the third quarter.  The basket gave LSUE its largest lead of the game, 44-39.
 
James scored 13 points in her final game with LSU Eunice, capping off her illustrious career with 945 points ranking second all-time in school history.
 
After Holmes responded to knot it back up at 48-48, JaNaijia Marks knocked down a three pointer from the top of the key with 4:06 left in the third quarter to help the Bengals regain the advantage, 51-48.
 
Aneisha Evans helped the Bulldogs claw back with back-to-back baseline jumpers to give Holmes the lead for good.  Evans and Kamelia Lacy both poured in 22 points, keying a 12-3 run to help push the Dogs lead to double digits midway through the fourth quarter.
 
Holmes outscored LSU Eunice 27-13 in the final stanza as the Bulldogs led by as many as 22 points.
 
After dominating the boards all season long ranked in the Top 5 nationally in offensive rebounds, total rebounds and rebound margin, Holmes won a 49-37 edge on the glass.
 
In addition to Saucier and James, Bethany Broussard was the other Bengal to net double digit points scoring 11 on the night.
