EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice split a doubleheader for a fifth consecutive day in Saturday's finale with Crowder College. The Bengals took Game One 7-6 before falling in Game Two 4-3.
LSU Eunice will hit the road for a busy weekend in Mississippi. The Bengals face Jones County on Thursday for a doubleheader before playing in the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Pearl River.
GAME ONE
Emily Henderson and Haley Godeaux's home runs helped boost the LSU Eunice offense in a 7-6 nailbiter against Crowder College. The Bengals held off a late surge by the RoughRiders to preserve the win.
Heather Zumo (3-1) pitched a complete game after surrendering six runs off 10 hits. The freshman induced 12 flyouts and 6 groundouts while striking out one batter and issuing one walk.
The Bengals pushed out to an early lead thanks to a first inning McKenzie King sacrifice fly and a critical Ally Howard two-out 2-RBI single in the second. After Crowder tied up the game in the third inning, Henderson responded with her first home run of the season with a shot to deep right center field.
An inning later, Godeaux's long ball helped put LSU Eunice up for good, 5-4. The Bengals pushed their lead to three in the fifth inning from a Mima Doucet sacrifice fly and Angela Donaldson scoring off a RoughRider error.
Crowder clawed back with two more in the sixth before Zumo and the defense slammed the door closed.
Ally Howard led the offensive attack with a 2-for-3 game and a pair of RBIs.
GAME TWO
The Bengals surrendered a fifth inning grand slam and could not mount a rally in a 4-3 series ender against Crowder College.
Jeanne Trahan endured a tough luck loss after throwing her best outing of the season. Trahan threw six full innings, allowing eight hits and striking out two batters. Four of her eight hit allowed came in that fateful fifth inning that saw LSUE surrender the grand slam to Theresa Collins.
LSU Eunice took an early 1-0 lead in the second after Emily Henderson scored on Darian Doucet's fielder's choice. The Bengals tried to rally late scoring runs in the fifth and sixth innings off a Madison Monson RBI single and Kelci Bodin RBI single. Haley Godeaux grounded out with the bases loaded in the sixth with an opportunity to tie the game.
Ally Howard produced a one-out single in the seventh but could not advance any further.
