Zumo, Doucet Pace Bengals To Friday Sweep Of MMI

EUNICE, La. – Reigning NJCAA Pitcher of the Week Heather Zumo continued her dominance while Mima Doucet provided an offensive spark in LSU Eunice's Friday doubleheader sweep of Marion Military Institute.

Zumo notched both wins while throwing a complete game shutout and coming in relief of Game Two.  Mima Doucet's home run was the only run Zumo needed in a Game One 1-0 win, while the sophomore provided two runs and two hits in the Bengals' 6-4 Game Two victory.

LSUE will host Marion Military for another twinbill on Saturday.  First pitch of the set is scheduled for 11:00AM from Lady Bengal Field.  Bengals All-Access will have a live video and Bayou Sports Network will have a live audio feed with Randy Guillory on the call.

GAME ONE

Heather Zumo extended her scoreless inning streak to 23 as LSU Eunice clung to a 1-0 win over Marion Military Institute.  The freshman's complete game shutout also made it back-to-back starts to pitch seven innings of scoreless softball.

After allowing a lead-off single, Zumo struck out four straight batters and retired six in a row.  Zumo allowed only two more baserunners the entire game, striking out 10 batters and inducing five fly outs and ground outs each.  She did not give up a walk in the early afternoon game.

The Bengals were having their own trouble with MMI starter Lexi McCray.  McCray struck out seven batters in a row, taking a no-hitter into the fourth inning before Mima Doucet changed that.

The sophomore sent a tower blast to left field for the lone run of the game.  It was Doucet's fifth home run of the season.

McCray was tagged with the hard luck loss, only allowing two hits while striking out eight batters.

MMI had an opportunity in the fifth inning with one on when a bloop pop up landed just behind the pitching circle.  LSUE's Darian Doucet was able to throw out Braedyn Ward at third to squash the threat.

GAME TWO

LSU Eunice produced timely hits late as the Bengals survived a back-and-forth Friday finale with Marion Military, 6-4.  The win gave LSU Eunice's its fourth straight victory, the longest streak of the season.

A.C. Gresham and Morgan Gaither put LSUE on its heels early two back-to-back one-out solo home runs in the first inning to give the Tigers a 2-0 advantage.  The Bengals responded with Madison Monson lifting a two-out homer to left center and knot the game back up, 2-2.
Starting pitchers Jeanne Trahan (LSUE) and Alex Reed (MMI) spared over the next three innings as the game stayed tied into the fifth.

A lead-off double from Dalton Merrill chased Trahan as reliever Kaeleigh Crutchfield allowed Merrill to score on a Jaina Walden sacrifice fly.

LSUE answered with two runs in the fifth thanks to a Monson sacrifice fly and Emily Henderson RBI single.

Heather Zumo entered the game and allowed her first run since February 16.  Morgan Gaither lassoed a lead-off double and would eventually tie the game at 4-4 thanks to a Yasmin Cottingham base hit.

That set the stage for Kelci Bodin and Sierra Gasca in the bottom of the frame who both drove in runs off a double and ground out, respectively.  Zumo was able to retire the size in order in the seventh to preserve the 6-4 victory.

Zumo notched her eighth win of the season after two innings of relief, scattering one earned run off two hits and three strikeouts.
