BAY MINETTE, AL- LSU Eunice piled up a single-game season-high 19 hits as part of a 31-hit output in a doubleheader sweep of Coastal Alabama-South. The sophomore duo of Mima Doucet and Emily Henderson combined for 11 hits and three home runs in the pair of victories.
The Bengals held on in Game One, 5-4, after surviving a late rally from the Warhawks. LSUE scored a come from behind win with three unanswered runs to take Game Two, 12-10.
LSUE (21-11) continues its nine-game road swing with a two-day stay at the Jimmie Stewart Classic. The Bengals face Lake Michigan College tomorrow at 12:30PM followed by a rematch with Coastal Alabama-North. The two teams split a twinbill on Wednesday. LSU Eunice then faces a Saturday gauntlet taking on Chipola College, Northwest Florida State College and Gulf Coast State College.
The three teams are a combined 69-9-1 including Chipola College and Gulf Coast State ranked in the Top 4 of the current NJCAA Division I polls.
GAME ONE
LSU Eunice held off a fourth inning surge by Coastal Alabama-South to notch an opening 5-4 win. The Bengals took advantage of a 12-hit barrage and four Warhawks errors on the game.
Mima Doucet and Emily Henderson both collected three hits and a solo home run each to help LSU Eunice push out to a 5-1 lead through three and a half innings. Madison Monson added a fourth inning two-run double, part of a three-run fourth for the Bengals.
Coastal Alabama-North responded with a three-run fourth of its own thanks to four extra-base hits off of Heather Zumo.
The freshman (12-5) threw her tenth complete game of the season, scattered four earned runs off nine hits while striking out five batters.
Sierra Gasca started the scoring with a bunt single to the pitcher in the first inning to plate Mima Doucet. Doucet followed with a third inning solo shot, her sixth home run of the season.
GAME TWO
The Bengals scored in six of the seven innings and collected a season-high 19 hits to take a wild 12-10 finale. LSUE scored three unanswered runs to rally past the Warhawks.
Ally Crooks and Mima Doucet produced consecutive run-scoring doubles in the sixth inning to help the Bengals regain the lead for good, 11-10. Emily Henderson added an insurance run in the seventh with a solo home run, her fourth of the season.
After the Bengals fell into an early 3-0 hole, LSUE quickly responded with three-run second highlighted by Kacie Becnel's two-run home run to right field. The Bengals took a short lead an inning later after Ally Crooks produced a bases loaded two-RBI single. The Warhawks responded with two of their own in the bottom of the third to make it a 5-5 ballgame.
Sierra Gasca and Haley Godeaux helped the Bengals to another three-run frame in the fourth before Coastal Alabama-South managed four runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Gasca and Godeaux were two of seven Bengals to notch multi-hit games. Ally Crooks paced the offense with a perfect 4-for-4 afternoon, driving in three runs and scoring twice.
That frame chased reliever Jeanne Trahan after giving up four runs, all earned in 1.1 innings of work. The freshman allowed three hits and one walk. She took over for Morghan LaTour who gave up four runs, one earned, on five walks and no hits in 2.1 innings pitched.
Heidi Zumo was the third LSUE pitcher to see the circle and after LaTour made reappearance for one out, Bengals ace Heather Zumo came in to seal the deal.
The freshman allowed one hit and one walk in 2.2 innings to earn her 13
th win of the season. It was Zumo's eighth consecutive win.
