EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice used the big inning and big bats in the top of the Bengals' order to secure a doubleheader sweep of San Jacinto College. The wins help LSUE push its current win streak to nine games.
The top of the LSUE lineup accounted for 10 RBIs and four runs scored in the twinbill. Mima Doucet led the Bengals charge with a four-hit afternoon while Madison Monson and Emily Henderson both collected home runs. The power hitting duo have hit a combined seven home runs the last six games.
The Bengals used a five-run fifth inning in Game One to hold on for a 6-5 victory, then rallied with a four-run fifth to win Game Two, 11-9.
LSUE will continue its four-game mini-homestand with a twinbill Saturday against Blinn College. The doubleheader is set for a 12:00PM start from Lady Bengal Field.
GAME ONE
A five-run fifth inning highlighted by a Madison Monson towering home run helped LSU Eunice take down San Jacinto College, 6-5. Both teams struggled early with 9 of the 11 runs coming in the final 2.5 innings.
Neither team collected a hit the first two innings until Taylor McHenry reached safely with a two-out single. McHenry scored one batter later after Rylie Bullen stroked a double to deep left field to give the Coyotes an early 1-0 lead.
The Bengals responded an inning later when Hannah Carpenter doubled home Sierra Gasca who reached with a two-out single. That set the stage for a monster fifth inning, after San Jacinto went back ahead 2-1 with a run in the top of the frame.
Haley Godeaux started the inning with a double to right, followed by a single to third by Angela Donaldson. Godeaux scored on a first-and-third double steal before the Bengals regained the lead, 3-2, on Mima Doucet's run scoring single to right.
One batter later, Madison Monson would push LSUE ahead with a towering 2-run home run to straight away center. It was the freshman's 17th home run of the season, currently tops in NJCAA Division II. Hannah Carpenter drove in her second run of the game with a two-out single to plate Sierra Gasca to finish the scoring in the fifth.
Mima Doucet, Gasca and Carpenter each notched a two-hit outing to pace the LSUE offense.
San Jacinto would not go away easily, scoring two runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh. Heather Zumo (19-5) picked up the win after going the distance, giving up five runs on seven hits and one walk. It was the most runs the freshman has given up since yielding seven runs in a loss to Jones County back on February 8. Zumo has given up more than one earned run just one since then.
GAME TWO
LSU Eunice piled up 11 runs and 14 hits in an 11-9 slugfest victory over San Jacinto College. The Bengals had four multi-hit performances headlines by a perfect 3-for-3 game by Lexi-Jo DeBarge.
Emily Henderson started off the offensive fireworks by blasting her seventh home run of the season, a two-run long ball to center field. Both teams scored a pair of runs in the second, followed by a three-spot from the Bengals in the fourth inning. LSUE scored two of its runs in the frame off sacrifices by Madison Monson and Emily Henderson, as well as a bases loaded error off a Mima Doucet groundball to second base.
San Jacinto answered with a seven-hit, six run inning in the fifth that would chase reliever Jeanne Trahan. The freshman did not give up an extra base hit in her 1.1 innings pitched. Trahan came in for starter Morghan LaTour after throwing three complete frames, scattering two runs off of five hits.
The Bengals would respond with a four-run fifth highlighted by Mima Doucet's go-ahead run scoring single. Angela Donaldson would also drive in a run off of a double while the two other runs were scored thanks to one of five San Jacinto errors.
Doucet and Emily Henderson both drove in three runs on the game.
Kaeleigh Crutchfield (4-0) picked up her first win since February 16 after throwing 1.2 innings, quieting San Jacinto for one unearned run off one walk. Crutchfield also struck out a batter in her first extended time since coming back from an injury.
Heather Zumo picked up the save after tossing the final inning, allowing one hit while striking out a batter.
