Home Runs Help Bengals Earn Sunday Split, Win Series At Tyler JC

TYLER, Tx. – LSU Eunice blasted five home runs on Sunday as the Bengals split its second doubleheader with Tyler JC.  The Bengals capped off a challenging road schedule with a 14-6 record.

LSUE (41-16) was led at the plate by sophomore Mima Doucet who provided two home runs and six RBIs over the two games.  The Bengals fell in Sunday's opener 10-6, then blasted four home runs in a come-from-behind 7-6 weekend finale win.  LSUE won three of the four meetings against the Apaches, currently the fifth-ranked team in NJCAA Division I.

The second-ranked team in NJCAA Division II closes out the regular season with a three game homestand starting Tuesday against LSU Alexandria.  The Bengals will face Baton Rouge CC on Saturday before preparing for the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament scheduled for May 11-12.  LSU Eunice will vie for two available tickets to the National Championship Tournament.

GAME ONE

A hot start for Tyler JC was too much for LSU Eunice to overcome as the Apaches won their first game of the weekend against the Bengals, 10-6.  TJC raced out to a 6-1 lead after two innings before the Bengals mounted a late charge.

Three errors loomed large for LSUE early on as five of the Apaches' six runs in the first two innings were unearned.  Heather Zumo (23-7) was tagged with the loss after throwing just 1.2 innings, allowing six runs off five hits and one walk.

Mima Doucet tried to provide a charge for the Bengals in the third inning with a solo home run, but was answered two innings later by a two-run shot by McKenzie Peet to give TJC an 8-3 lead.

Doucet cut the deficit to 8-6 with a bases clearing three run double in the sixth inning before the Apaches responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame.

The sophomore Doucet led LSUE with a 3-for-4 game, driving in season's best five runs and scoring twice.

LSUE was able to get two runners on base in the seventh inning with just one out, but TJC reliever Kaycee Parker retired Haley Godeaux and Lakyn Wales to end the game.

GAME TWO

LSU Eunice blasted four home runs in the last three innings to help complete a 7-6 rally over Tyler JC.  The four long balls tied a season's best that was set February 9 against East Mississippi.

Tyler JC pushed out to an early 3-0 lead through four innings before the Bengals bombed their way back.  Mima Doucet started the surge with a lead-off solo home run in the fifth inning.  After TJC answered in the bottom of the fifth with a run of its own, Darian Doucet's two-run blast and a solo shot from Angela Donalson tied the game at 4-4.

Rebecca Snow would score on a passed ball in the sixth to put the Apaches back in front 5-4.  Snow was one of three TJC batters to notch multi-hit games.

LSUE took its first and only lead in the seventh inning that began with a lead-off home run from Emily Henderson.  After Ally Howard reached on an error, Haley Godeaux would drive in Howard for the go-ahead run.  Darian Doucet added a valuable insurance run on a sacrifice bunt to plate Godeaux.

The three-run frame was not enough to put the Apaches to rest.  Heather Zumo gave up a sacrifice fly by McKenzie Peet to cut the lead down to 7-6.  Zumo struck out the next batter to end the game and pick up her 24th win of the season.

The freshman relieved Morghan LaTour by pitching the final five innings of the game.  Zumo scattered five runs, all unearned, off seven hits and one walk.  She also picked up five strikeouts.  The LSUE defense committed four errors during the game.

Emily Henderson and Maleah Saucedo both picked up two-hit games in LSUE's nine-hit attack.  Darian Doucet paced the Bengal run production with three RBIs.
