EUNICE, La. – The LSU Eunice offense piled up 24 hits and 19 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Southwest Mississippi CC. The Bengals also scored a pair of shutouts to improve their current win strea to seven games.
LSU Eunice used back-to-back home runs by Madison Monson and Emily Henderson en route to an 8-0 Game One win then an eight-run frame in an 11-0 finale.
It was LSUE's first games in a week and only sixth in last 19 days.
LSUE (33-14) continues their six-game homestand next Wednesday, April 11 when San Jacinto-North comes to Eunice. The Bengals split a doubleheader against the Coyotes in Texas during the opening weekend of the season. First pitch is set for 1:00PM from Lady Bengal Field.
GAME ONE
LSU Eunice smashed three home runs to cruise past Southwest Mississippi 8-0 in the opening game of their doubleheader.
The Bengals struck for two runs in the first inning after three consecutive hits helped Mima Doucet and Madison Monson score to make it a 2-0 LSUE advantage. LSU Eunice would break the game open an inning later with a five-run inning.
Kelci Bodin started off the scoring with a fielder's choice to shortstop which allowed Sierra Gasca to score. Madison Monson followed that up two batters later with a towering two-run home run, her NJCAA's best 16th of the season. Emily Henderson answered with a solo home run in the very next at-bat, giving the Bengals a 7-0 lead.
Lakyn Wales capped off the home run derby with a solo home run in the fourth inning to help secure the run-rule win.
Wales, Henderson, Monson and Doucet all had two-hit games to lead the LSU Eunice 11-hit attack.
Heather Zumo (18-5) allowed just two hits in four scoreless innings. Zumo also notched six strikeouts while not issuing a walk. The freshman has not given up a walk in her last three appearances.
Kaeleigh Crutchfield closed the game out with a one-hit fifth inning.
GAME TWO
The Bengals broke out for a nine-hit, eight-run third inning to blow past Southwest Mississippi 11-0. Eight different Bengals had at least a hit as LSUE emptied the bench in the runaway win.
Lakyn Wales began the onslaught with a two-run double followed by Sierra Gasca's infield single to plate Wales two batters later. Angela Donaldson provided a two-run single to make it 7-0 LSUE while Mima Doucet also scored a pair on a standup double to left field. Emily Henderson sacrificed the final run of the big inning with a fly ball to score Doucet.
Wales put the Bengals on the board in the first with a sacrifice grounder to third to score Mima Doucet. Angela Donaldson made it 2-0 LSUE in the second with a run-scoring double.
Donaldson was a perfect 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs and a run scored while Wales also pumped in three RBIs on a 1-for-2 game. Madison Monson joined Donaldson with a three-hit effort.
Morghan LaTour provided four scoreless innings of work, scattering just three hits and one walk. The freshman improved to 6-1 on the season while striking out four batters. Jeanne Trahan capped off the game by sitting down the Bears in order in the fifth inning.
