EUNICE, La. – The early season lessons continued for LSU Eunice in a 5-4 ten inning victory over North Lake College on Saturday at Bengal Stadium. The Bengals (2-0) surrendered three runs in the ninth inning to fall behind before rallying to not only force extra innings, but win the game.
Nursing a 3-1 advantage in the ninth, LSUE's
Landon Clifton (Napoleonville, LA, Ascension Catholic HS) loaded the bases with three consecutive walks. A sacrifice fly, error and double helped the Blazers regain the lead 4-3. LSUE would respond by loaded the bases itself and
Bren Faulk (Abbeville, LA, Erath HS) tying the game with a sacrifice ground out to shortstop.
Tod Gauthe' (Brusly, LA, Brusly HS) (1-0) would pick up the win by facing the minimum in the tenth inning, inducing a double play and striking out Gavin Kennard to give LSUE a chance to win the game.
LSUE would get the first two baserunners on with walks before
Nick Bellina (Donaldsonville, LA, Ascension Catholic HS) put the Bengals in scoring position with a line drive on a slash bunt attempt to reload the bases.
Tristan Welch (Baton Rouge, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS) would be hit by a pitch to score the winning run.
Evan Keller (Destrehan, LA, Destrehan HS) played a key role in the Bengal offense, having his hand in four of the five runs. The shortstop tied the game in the fourth, scoring off a
Brooks Rushworth (Sterlington, LA, Sterlington HS) single. Keller would then tie the game in the sixth with a double to plate
Javier Vaz (Huntsville, AL, Huntsville HS), and score off a wild pitch to give LSUE the 3-1 advantage. He was responsible for two of the team's five hits.
Tyler Booth (Lake Charles, LA, Barbe HS) pitched four innings in his LSUE starting debut. The sophomore gave up one run off three hits while striking out four batters and walking two.
Slate Fuller (Lake Charles, LA, Barbe HS) and
Jacob Spell (Prairieville, LA, St. Amant HS) also pitched in relief.
